Looking for a service manual (Harman Kardon)

Hello group- I'm trying to fix my own woofer. It is a Harman Kardon model TS5. When I turn it on it gives a rattling sound almost like bursts of machine gun fire - even with no audio signal going to it. I have no clue what happened to it. I'm hoping someone can direct me to a website where I can get a service manual. I took out the "speaker" part, but the amplifier is still in there and I am not able to separate it from the unit to open it up and take a look inside. I'm very handy and do have good electronics background. Thanks.

Have you sent an email through the Harman website? Service manuals are often tough to come by.

I did not see service manuals but I did not go through every inch of the website either. In any event, I think you would end up calling the customer service number.

See if you can get one form HK. If you can't you will be up the creek without a paddle. The problem smacks of a bad cap someplace, most likely the power supply. What test gear to you own? You are unlikely to make much progress on that one, without a good amount of gear. A Variac to slowly power it up and give you a chance to analyse the power up will be very important. You will need a scope and VET VOM. You will very likely need an oscillator also.

Thank you very much gents for all the responses. I was able to locate a service manual so I'm good there. The problem is that the manual does not show how to take the woofer apart for testing and part replacement. Specifically, it does not explain how to separate the amplifier unit from the enclosure. I took out all the screws on the back and I'm looking through the huge speaker opening. I can't figure out if the emplifier is supposed to come off by pushing it from the inside out, or by pushing it from the outside and out the speaker opening. I must take the amplifier out as that's where the problem is. Has anyone removed an amplifier before from a HK subwoofer ?

There is always the fixation device you missed. Look and look again. Feeling with your hand for missed fixation points will also help. Is the amp loose at all from what you have dismantled so far? Sometimes units are mounted by press fit lugs, that have to be squeezed. There are units that the case compresses to the fascia, so you have to release bolts holding the case to the chassis, and remove the case off the chassis, then withdraw the unit from the front.

It was mounted and fixed in there, so it has to come out.

I've reviewed the feed back and this doesn't sound like an easy fix for an amature (me). I'm having the same problem and wonder if you got the problem fixed, what it was and how you suggest I proceed to fix mine?

Two people with the same fault strongly suggests a weakness due to design. If you phone a Harmon Kardon service center, I would bet they know what the problem is, if they have seen a few of these before. Whether they will tell you or not is another matter.
