Looking for $2000 balance home theather system

So stuff I need:
5.1 or 7.1 surround system
good receiver


I still didnt buy anything and 1 year past.

Before people recommend me the svs system

you can check out PSB, KEF, Energy, a host of value oriented speaker companies to fill out the most important part of the sound system: the things that actually make sound!

the first thing I thought of was 5x Ascend 170SE for $870, and that's not including any package discount, and say perhaps an SVS PB12 for $569.

Ok, that only leaves you $260, and that's not even including shipping. Can you stretch budget to roughly $2,250?

I think I want to keep my buget at 2,000. My roommate attached a costco 500 dollar home theather kit thing and it sounded good. I really have no clue what is great sound. I am more of a computer guy and know lot of stuff about video cards , mobo, etc but not really much about great sounding home theater speakers.


Why did you want to change the speaker to the ascend? Is it that the speakers from the svs is not that good but the sub is?

Make no mistake, the system I propose will annihilate your friend's system.

1. Because I've heard them. I've never heard the SVS. You can use search functions regarding consumer comparos if you are curious for more opinions.
2. Relatively transparent, with excellent offaxis response, particularly when considering its price point.
3. ID (as is SVS) means buying an identical speaker for the center is easily accommodated, and nothing can possibly be a better choice for center speaker. Nothing. If you can, keep it upright, and on the same plane as the mains. If it's going to be higher, yet vertical, flip speaker upside down so tweeter is closer to the same plane.
