Looking at new laptops

I will disagree with you here, they are much better for audio(Pro Tools) and they are used by almost everyone in the Live concert production field.I switched from PC because the Mac was much easier for me to use and operate. If I get a new external device there is no downloading drivers and whatnot you plug it in and blammo it works.Apple is a great computer but it is more expensive than a $700 HP that I bought my wife(and have already had to have a tech look at twice). You get what you pay for,the service at Applecare is second to none.Matt you got a ton of choices out there good luck buddy...:D:)
Yeah, I'm trying to keep in mind the quality and customer support I'll get with the Macs. I priced a 15" Mac book Pro last night at around $2100 with all the options I wanted. It's a hard to look at what I'm getting hardware wise when I look at what I can get for that amount on a PC.

1) What is your budget?

$2000, really don't want to go any higher

2) What size notebook would you prefer?

13-17" not really concerned with this.

4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?

a. Like:
b. Dislike: Dell

5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?

No, would rather have new

6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?

Web surfing, (multitasking many documents so need a nice and easy interface to switch between them), music, play ALL sorts of video files with no stuttering, Games at med to med-high settings.

7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?

Both but mostly used as a desktop replacement with external monitor, docking station would be cool.

8) Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games?

MW2 and WoW

9) How many hours of battery life do you need?

A couple hours would be nice

10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?

Both is fine.

11) What OS do you prefer? Windows (XP or Vista or Windows 7), Mac OS, Linux, etc.

Windows 7 if a PC

Screen Specifics

12) From the choices below, what screen resolution(s) would you prefer?

Resolution is not that important

13) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?

Doesn't matter. Want a very crisp and bright colored screen.

Build Quality and Design

14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?

Not too important but is a factor, something other than black would be nice

15) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?

A couple years at least

Notebook Components

16) How much hard drive space do you need; 80GB to 640GB? Do you want a SSD drive?

320 or higher, a lower SSD would be fine or combo

17) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a CDRW/DVD-ROM, DVD Burner or Blu-Ray drive?

For the price category I'm looking at Blu-Ray is to be expected.

All BS aside there are pro's and cons to each. I am not hiding the fact that I love macs, but let me rephrase. It is not the Mac I love so much as it is the OS. Hardware is hardware, and Macs are using state of art hardware as are others. The OS is where it counts. I was just at Staples getting a chair for my son and playing with win 7. ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME? They have ripped off OS X so much I am surprised Apple does not have them in court as we speak.

Win 7 is still just window with a fancy GUI and all the problems that plague that OS design. Do you all realize that Microsoft makes the ONLY os that is not UNIX based? Are they right and the all the others( SUN,IBM,Linux,Apple, ect.) wrong? I think the not! OS X is a superior OS period, and even Gates himself admits such. Let's not even get into why OS X is so far ahead of windows in EVERY aspect. You will loose that war.

If you want a superior OS to do 98% of your computing then get a mac. If you absolutely need a game machine then get a PC. It really comes down to that. Software is a non issue at this point in time. The best browsers run on mac, the best photo software runs on mac, the best video software runs on mac, the best recording software runs on mac, The best version of MS Office is a mac version, UNIX apps are ported to Mac, Linux apps are ported to Mac, windows apps are ported to mac, Macs run windows side by side or dual boot or both. Macs can run Linux, mac and windows all one computer either native or dual boot. Take your pick.

Does Apple have issues? You bet. They really piss me off for not having a tower that I can purchase for about 1K that I can add stuff to later. This really pisses me off. I CAN NOT AFORD 2K FOR A TOWER APPLE AND THE MAC MINI DONT CUT IT!!! I want an Intel mac tower that is like my old G4 tower that I can expand on as I see fit. PC's have mac beat hands down when it comes to getting a tower that you can expand on. Problem is unless your hacking your PC to run x86 OSX, you are stuck with windows or linux and linux has a LONG way to go still.

when it comes to laptops then it gets more even. Price for price the Apple laptops are a good deal and awesome engineering. Tell me how many other laptops out there for 1199 are built from a solid piece of Al.

Jeff makes some excellent points but some false ones as well. I wouldn't go as far as to say os x is a superior platform in all the aspects he listed as there is pros and cons to both. It really boils down to what your willing to pay. Windows doesn't just have a huge market share for nothing.

I would and do say OS X is a superior OS in all aspects except the fact that it does not have as many games. There may be some business apps that a particular company might need that are windows only, but there are also a lot of companies that are all mac or all linux and do quite well without windows.

But Matt does not want an OS X/windows debate, he wants a laptop. I say if games are not your primary reason Matt then get a Mac. You will love the OS and the way the apps integrate with each other. Windows has nothing that compares to that. If you want a primary game machine then get a windows based PC. The macs play games fine, but you would be booting into windows to play some of them, and if you don't want to do that then the PC is the answer.

Well after some mind-numbing research I think I've decided on a Mac. Gaming is a major priority but I after reading and watching reviews I feel comfortable the Macbook Pro can handle my gaming needs. I might even surprise my wife with a regular Macbook, she hates her low-end Compaq Vista OS desktop.

Welcome :) Are you familiar with using Mac OS X at all? if not then just pick up one of the myriad of books out there on the subject. They will give you good tips and hints on using the OS. It is a bit different than Windows. Things work different and you don't want to carry over windows mistakes when using your mac. For example covering your desktop with shortcut icons. No need to do that on a mac. No need to do it on windows either really. There are seasoned mac users here too so just ask if you have any questions.:D

Yup, going to get the applecare plan. I'm going with refurbs as I've heard they are basically new. I'm almost 100%on getting a 15" macbook pro and I may get the wife a 20" imac but we will see, we are getting Iphones as well since her cell died a couple days ago.

Faith in your new computer, misplaced may be. As is your faith in the Apple side of the Force. Twisted by the dark side young matt32 has become.

Good luck Matt, I hope you enjoy your new computers when you settle in on them... I wouldn't mind a Mac some day, they are pretty cool, just can't justify the prices over performance and limitations.... though many many people are thrilled with them for sure...

My son is a gamer and follows quite a bit of hardware discussion, Sager computers are extremely reliable and totally configurable from what I gather, might be worth a look.... As well as ASUS products... http://www.sagernotebook.com/category_browse.php?cid=&price_s=500
Here is another great site
