HT System

You will be fine starting with a good 2.1 system for music and HT. That is how I started my system in order to get better quality components. 2.1 is also probably a good option since you might be moving more frequently in college.
Just make sure that you get a HT receiver so you can easily add the center and surround channels when your room and budget allow.
For speakers, I would avoid the BB and check out the options at local dealers in your budget including Paradigm Studio 20's, Klipsch Reference, Energy, PSB, etc.
