I need help figuring out how to install (not purchased yet) In-Wall Surround Sound back speakers for 7.1. I have already run the wiring to install them in the wall under the counter top but my problem is that the wall is not parallel to the front wall, but at an angle as you can see in the drawing. I've got the wiring located so that the speakers would be centered between the two chairs.
Option #1: If I mount them flush with the wall then I'm afraid that the angle will be too great and even if I buy speakers with movable tweeters that they might not move enough, and does the woofer need to face the back of the listener or does it not matter?
Option #2: Should I mount them further to the left (in the picture) of the counter top so that they face the front wall but then they would not be centered, how would that impact the sound envelope?
Option #3: This is the option my wife does not like, buy a small directional speaker that mounts to the exterior wall where we can more directly focus the sound. If I have to do this she does not what the same size as the other satalites that I have so that limits me to small weak speakers.

Any direction is appreciated.

I'd say option 1 but a combination of option 1 and 2 could work too if you can place one on the flat side so it is directly facing the wall and the other on the angled side.

You haven't bought the speakers yet so you can investigate many types and brands. Some of them are fully moveable - both woofer and tweeter - but some have a limited range of motion for the tweeter (15-20 degrees).

I haven't seen any in-wall/in-ceiling that are bi or dipole but Niles had an in-ceiling that has two tweeters and a switch to set them to fire out-of-phase (making it like a dipole). Bi/Dipole may work well because they'd create a more diffuse surround field than monopoles that would fire more or less right at you.

Please tell me who makes a directional woofer and tweeter combination speaker?

I thought about placing speakers on both surfaces as you suggested, not sure about that though. That would probably be my last resort.

The Dipole speakers would be a surface mount that would stick out and make the wife unhappy, she does not want to see them when she enters the room. I love the idea but you know how it is, gotta have peace in the home.

The speakers MDS is talking about are the AIM series from SpeakerCraft and they're not cheap. Speaks w/ pivoting tweets on the two different surfaces seems the most viable option in your current situation.

I think Niles and Polk also offer in-wall/in-ceiling speakers where the woofer and tweeter can be pivoted independently.

In ceiling is probably the best location...but too late. Could you move them to a location in the back wall? The under counter location is very narrow and directional at best...far from optimum for very good surround imaging - I'd try to stay away from that if at all possible.

Mentioned here were speakers that pivot - there are several on the market, even the HFL brand...just a sampling to search here - http://www.hififorless.com/categories.php?categoryid=575&d=2

The last suggestion I would make is to look into wireless surrounds to go on the back wall or corners....(but they do require power cables).
