Sounds like the same ol story huh? Well here is the twist. This week a just ruled that yes the man was indeed drunk, but the accident was caused by the cop pulling in front of oncoming traffic, and would have happened anyway. So the drunk driver got the usual DUI charges, and nothing more.

Personally, I agreed with the jury's decision.
i also agree, i studied law myself (but didnt finish). the only crime he commited was DUI ... but i sure hope the cop did a rodney king on his a$

I've seen some of the worst drivers and pedestrians in Austin.
Absolutely. I had a lot of near misses when I worked in Austin. For example, kids standing on the sidewalks PRETENDING to jump out in front of cars to try and cause accidents, and high-fiveing when they made someone swerve into the oncoming traffic lanes... People driving the wrong way down roads just to try and get in front of traffic and then turn right across 2 lanes of moving traffic... I swear, drivers in other cities may seem to be out to kill you (most people from big cities say their drivers are the worst) ... but in Austin, the drivers typically seem out to kill themselves.

Must be all that pent-up rage from eating "happy, free-range tofu."

We had a case here in Michigan that just rapped up. A police cruiser tried to cross 3 lanes of interstate traffic and do a U to join a chase going the other direction. During the course of that turn, he was struck in the side of his car by another vehicle at highway speeds. Turned out that the driver of the other car was drunk.

Do you remember when Denny McClain's daughter was killed in an accident. Drunk driver was convicted of manslaughter, but probably didn't deserve it. She had hit a trailer that was sideways in the road just past the crest of the hill. Drunk driver hit her and one of the two accidents killed her. She was sober and hit the trailer, he was drunk and convicted of killing her. Yes, he was definitely drunk and deserved to be punished, but in this case, question the manslaughter conviction.
