Sadly your correct. They sucked everyone in with these smart tv's. Streaming services All of them are in on it, from putting decided buttons on our remotes to Bill boards Ads in our homes so all of them can track,spy etc. The day of the tv's that couldn't do this are long gone.

People like to save money, so they built some way of streaming in, to make people ditch their streaming devices and that also removes setup of these devices from the user's life. When they don't like to do that in the first place, who's going to say "No, that's OK, I have a Roku/Fire Stick/etc and will use that. For the little added cost (if it actually did cost more), it's a no-brainer. Another problem is that NOBODY reads the EULA completely and at this point, they're so long and elaborate that it might be best to run it past a lawyer before agreeing. My bedroom TV quit, so I went to Beast Buy to see what they had- my distributors don't have anything decent at the same price and when I found they were out of the model I had checked out the previous time in the store, I checked the 'Open Box' area- found a 32" Insignia with FireTV for $77. That's less than the middle of the line Roku streamer and that doesn't come with a TV.

What is an "open WiFi connection"? If WiFi is active in the router, it would have 254 addresses available, going along with IP protocols unless it was limited by the provider.

A device can't jump in without a password, assuming the WiFi network was set up to be secure and there's absolutely no situation where that should happen. If it was connected wirelessly at the beginning, it may be able to have 'auto connect' turned off.

There is also, absolutely no way a government should be allowed to access this info IF they have prevented unwarranted search or seizure.

Open WiFi is without passwords. Some businesses use it for easy guest access but pretty much all home routers have passwords enabled by default. This packet sniffing is nasty business. Imagine a bar or coffee shop with smart TVs. They could listen in an all mobile data from guests using the public WiFi.

If it had access, it could theoretically use the network without permission as part of your "agreement" implied by connecting it to your network at all.

I noticed this weekend while resetting one of the Fire TVs that it now asks "do you want to store your network ID and password on Amazon so you other devices can easily connect?" which was an obvious NO. I had to reset it because our friend's son who was staying with us this summer for an internship hosed it pretty badly and then connected the LG TV directly to our internet....which I didn't realize until I saw this thread and checked lol. He said he "fixed" it, but it didn't occur to me that was how he fixed it. That is the only LG TV we have, which she got free from work for her 25th work anniversary. It went in the guest room.
