LG Blu-Ray/HD-DVD ?.

Well, my dad decided buy the LG Bluray/HD-DVD player. He also bought the new 52" mitsubishi LCD flat panel. I was initially impressed by the Mitsubishi's display, which without a review on it, I had no feedback on it. The other thing was that I wasn't sure how good the LG performed. One thing I need opinions on is what happened when we put the HD-DVD movie Sahara in. In the beginning of the movie, the camera focuses, and pans up and down, on news print and articles around the cabin of the boat. As the camera does this, the print seems to shutter slightly on the screen back and forth, or side to side. It was annoying and gave my dad and I a headache watching the beginning scene. We then put in a bluray and didn't notice anything like that. What I don't know is if the movie intentionally did that or is there a problem with player or display in particular. Hope someone can help.

That sounds like a deinterlacing error on the 1080p source material when it is converted to 1080i/60 and back again.

I don't quite understand. The TV is 1080p as well. So you saying the source material is deinterlaced to 1080i and back to 1080p. I still a novice at this The mitsubishi model is LT-52244 LCD which is new out. This thing has six colors you can calibrate on it plus the other standard calibrations (hue and so forth). I'm going to run Avia on it today when I get off work. I hope that the problem is with the HD-DVD itself. This would explain why the Pirates of The Car. Bluray disc was fine.

I made a mistake. The TV model is LT-52133.

It would seem it is an interlace problem. Does the combo player allow access to the full 1080p resolution of HD DVD? Is there a setting for this on the player? I know that a lot of the HD DVD players don't display 1080p even though the content on the disc is 1080p. I would read the refer to the manual and check the settings to see if they have independant settings for Blu-ray and HD DVD and just as well, be sure the player allows HD DVD to be viewed in 1080p instead of 1080i.

If for some reason it does not allow 1080p for HD DVD try it on 720p and see if the same part has the same problem on that disc.

I do think the shakey scene on Sahara is either a disc issue to TV issue. The new Mitsubishi LT-52144 states that it has chip that corrects this issue while view fast moving scenes such as sports or otherwise. My dad has the lower LT-52133 model which he is going to return shortly for the "144" model. When that happens I will update the board.

I haven't spent enough time over my dad's house to really focus on the differences between the BD and HD. I will say that the Bluray does look fantastic, but so does HD. I like the LG a lot and I believe my dad paid $799 for it. It was $1200. Jeez, my dad now has better stuff than I do, other than the speakers

The LG combo player only outputs 1080p @24fps. It will not play 1080p if your tv does not support 24fps. (Most 1080p tvs available now accept 1080p @ 60fps.) Which if your TV has a good performing scaler this shouldn't be a problem.

The LG is a pretty slick machine. Aside from the menus on HD DVD it is a very capable player.

Ok, lets break this down. I am only a novice at this, but I do understand that movies are shot in 24fps. What does 60fps give us? The eye cannot discern info any faster than that. Is that right?

If anyone has a chance, check out the mitsubishi website and look at the LT-52144 LCD. It says it has smooth 120hz to eliminate jumpy scene at high speed. I am guessing that is essentially what the 60fps also does.
