Left to Right and Right to Left Speaker Placement ?

Why do pre-amplifiers, and recovers have a left and right connection?

Wouldn’t placing the left speaker in the right position, and the left speaker vis a versa make a difference?

Would the sound be changed if the speakers where switched Left to Right and Right to Left?

The sound stage image would be reversed. In other words it would be a mirror image.

When the music is recorded the producer/sound engineer is creating a sound stage. If he/she put the guitar on the left side of the stage to the audience that's how they intend you to hear it...if you reversed it I don't see a huge problem, but generally speaking you want to hear the music as it was intended, thus you connect the channels in sync with the labeling.

It is a big issue for AV. If a vehicle moves on the screen left to right, it will sound right to left. If someone closes a door on the left, the sound will will be of a door closing on the right. In my view that is a big problem and would be highly distracting.

Agreed...even more so for AV!

Just hook it up like it's supposed to be hooked up.

If we are talking about switching WIRES from one side to the other, it will sound incorrect as mentioned above. If you mean physically swapping right and left speakers (keeping left and right wire positions) then it would depend on the speakers and how they're oriented. Most will be fine in either position, some are designed as mirror image and will slightly alter the overall imaging of the front stage.

Lol! Confession time. I did exactly what Mark said. Had my connections reversed. Started watching a movie and sure enough,a car on screen went from left to right, but the sound went right out of my living room to the left. I laughed pretty hard at that one.

I asked this question because I was changing some things around in my system, and unknowingly reversed the left and right pre-out's on my processor. It took me a few days of listening to noticed it didn't quite sound the same. I ran a level calibration test, and then discovered reversal of the left and right RCA outs. I was wondering how important this is for stereo listening.

As was said for 2ch content just a reversal of soundstage, not that important...for multi-ch audio/audio-visual stuff then the directional cues can be off. Your choice.
