Anyone know what type of store I could find these in? I tried Home depot and big building supply stores but no dice.

I want them to mass load my totems.

any place who sells ammo reloading supplies would likely have that.

Use BBs. They're not a hazardous material :) A gun shop is probably one of the few places you can buy lead as a consumer and even so, I wouldn't want it sitting in my speakers.

i wonder if stainless steel shot would be better.. again go to a gun store.. but isnt the point of lead to deaden the cabinet.. would other materials accomplish it as well?

IMO, it is simply the fact that it is a somewhat dense and loose material, since sand and cat litter work as well. But who wants cat litter in their speakers or stands? :)

There are other materials that Totem recommends such as certain types of dry sand or even orderless kitty litter..... I just thought that taking the sand out once I move would be hard... I may go with the kitty litter option for cost purposes.

I don't see how it would be hazardous, sitting in a speaker cabinet. It also makes less noise if it should happen to move against other pellets, unlike harder metals.

It is considered a hazardous material. It isn't like it is going to outgas I am sure, but having it in the room, unless it is sealed in, means a potential source. I don't think most people go around licking lead based paint either, but I wouldn't paint my house with it (I know, not exactly the same, but you get the idea).

If you sealed it in something else, like a plastic bag, regardless of kitty litter or what have you, it should be OK.

The problem with kitty litter is it's made from clay. It will break up and create dust.

For a cheap alternative try aquarium gravel. Should be able to get that stuff almost anywhere.

They look like they would have a lot of space between them once they would be in the speaker. Have you heard anyone use this method before?

I've used it for ballast in other items to add weight, but not speakers. You can also use crushed coral like they use in marine aquariums. It's smaller grain size, but more expensive than the gravel.

Can someone explain the purpose of this exercise?
The lead shot/mass goes inside the speaker? Where?
What effect does this have on the sound waves at the listener position??

Kitty litter isn't very dense- playground or mason's sand would work better. Silica, used for sandblasting would be better.

That's what I'm thinking.
I know the Depot sells washed sand box sand, I'd try that.

It's weird, you are very knowledge yet people don't seem to like you.:D

I may be way off, just looking at your negative rep.

Get lead shot from an ammo store and seal it in a contractor bag from Home Depot.
