so you didn't answer my question, must mean that you only have 1 circuit for all your gear....

Haha, you and I are thinking the same stuff. I was interested in his response to your post too, but, I assume he checked that before thanking you for your post. If he plugs that amp in by itself, with nothing else connected to it, and it still hisses, then it's probably the amp.

Sorry, too much going on! Thanks for the remarks.

Yes, I have everything plugged into the same circuit. In fact, initially I had everything plugged into the same power console. Lonnie said the hum was probably being generated because the amp was plugged into the power console, so I unplugged it from the console and plugged it into the same wall outlet as the console. The hum was identical. Yes, different from the hiss that you were discussing, but I don't expect the hiss to be any different if I plug it back into the power console.

Well then I agree, with all the ideas givin and tested here by you, that it is indeed the amp... thats unfortunate :(

I am extremely happy with my Rotel RMB 1095...

Great Amp and quiet... Warm but quiet... :)

Will EMO just let you return the amp up to a certaim timeline?

Greg, I think it is 30 days and it can be returned for a full credit minus shipping.

Did you ever get your amp fixed?

I thought Adam has had his amp longer than I have had mine.

Emo told me it would be a 24 hour turn-around but it has been missing from my house for almost 2 weeks now. I called Monday and Lonnie said I should get it before Thanksgiving. It didnt come but I understood and figured it would be here Friday or Saturday; I am disappointed that I still dont have it and will call first thing in the morning.

Wow that is odd and I would not be happy. I don't want to highjack Adams thread but 2 weeks:eek:. I am not that patient.

Greg, you aren't mistaken. I have had one of their amps longer than you have - but it's the RPA-1.

I ordered the IPS-1 on October 19 and received it on October 26. So, Monday will actually be 31 days. However, I sent an e-mail about an RMA number on November 16 and got no response. When I called on November 21, the guy ("Dan") said that I could call back on Monday and get it all worked out - he seemed a little flustured at the time. So, hopefully they don't give me any grief, or I'll be pretty upset.

Oh I see; good luck with it! Sounds like it is faulty and they should at least send you a new one.

Sorry to hear about your IPS-1 troubles. I just got done watching Tears Of The Sun on Bluray and had it way louder than normal, and it was pushing all my speakers quite well. When I was done I felt the amp and to my surprise it was warm, not even close to hot. Although I will say it is a tad bit chilly in my house, and the amp is on the top of the rack with plenty of ventilation, but even still it ran cool as can be. I also never hear any hum from the unit while it's on or off, and there is also no audible hiss from any of the connected speakers when they are not in use. It sounds to me like you should definitely have the amp exchanged and give it one more shot. If you still don't like the newere one, my suggestion would be to return that and wait till next year when the XPA-5 comes out, it's not a class H but it still seems like it should be a great unit, and it will save you some money.

Thanks, GR. I'll talk to Lonnie tomorrow (if I can get a hold of him) and see if he thinks a replacement would make a difference. He seemed to think that the hum was normal, but if he changes his mind, I'll give it another chance (assuming that they'll let me return the new one if it does the same thing).

Not right now. I'll probably just stick with my receiver powering the center and rears for a while. I'm glad that I tried out the IPS-1, but I just don't think that it's for me.
I personally think the LPA-1 is a tad overkill.:D You have a THX certified receiver, it can surely power the center and surrounds to ear piercing levels without clipping. Also, given that the fronts are connected to the RPA-1 you should be more than fine.:D

Cons
1. Hums loudly when in standby mode (which baffles me - it's running an LED), but the hum is normal for that amp according to Lonnie

3. When the amps are active, the speakers hooked to the IPS-1 hiss. The same is true when I power the speakers using my receiver, but my receiver shuts the surround channel amps off in stereo mode (whereas the IPS-1 remains on because it's not controlled by the receiver)[/INDENT]
I recently purchased my new Sherbourn 7/2100A. It comes with 7 independent transformers for each of the seven channels. When I plugged it to the wall and switched it on (no other equipment attached), I noticed a low but quite significant hum from the amp itself. The amp comes with two power cords to power the seven transformers and both were plugged in. Initially I thought there was some sort of a ground loop between the two power cords. I opened a case with Sherbourn and they said it is not a ground loop but the hum from the transformers. The engineer went further to qualify the hum as the result of the power of the amp

I later connected my Integra DTC9.8 and Klipsch RF82s to the amp and I do not hear any hiss or noise emanating from the speakers. Rest all is working very well in my system but I guess I have to keep up with the low but annoying (and nauseating if I sit close to the amp for a extended period of time). I moved my sitting area little further away from the amp. Luckily it is not my bedroom so I feel sorry for your case.

The amp (my Sherbourn) is otherwise solidly built and works very well. If I were to buy a new amp, I will definitely try a different one though that's more silent.

Hope this helps.

The humming sound in the transformer is from it being powered. The coils oscilate and resonate againts each other when current flows through them. Toroidals aren't typically prone to this problem however, it is a more common characteristic of old iron core power transformers.

Just talked to EMO and they havent even shipped my amp yet; so much for the 24 hour turn around. CS seems to just have taken a back seat; their explaination was "we are not sure why it hasnt shipped but we will ship it tomorrow".

I feel for ya, Greg. Sorry that it didn't ship last week, and I hope that you get it this week. From the time that my first RPA-1 blew to when I got a replacement was just about three weeks, so I understand the "pain." :)

I just got off the phone with Emotiva (finally had a chance to call today...work is busy). Lonnie is gone to the warehouse but is supposed to call me back in about an hour. The woman (Kathy, I believe) said that I could call tomorrow if he doesn't get back to me today and that they wouldn't hold me to the 30-day return window if they're too busy to help me before it ends. That was nice to hear.

That is the one bad thing about Lonnie being the end all to their customer service. The need to clone him.:D
