I would boot up the machine in Safe Mode w/networking and see if the Computer runs at a speed your happy with. If so, its not a hardware issue and reformatting would be a viable option.

To boot in safe mode, just hold down F8 as the computer starts and select the boot method.

Greg, have you run a program to search for malware and viruses?

I use Spybot - Search & Destroy for malware.

If I were there, I'd also go through all of the running processes and investigate any of them (using Google) that I didn't recognize. Since I'm not there...I'm going to recommend that you buy a new laptop.

I am all about getting a new one but now BMX has me concerned about spending less than 1k.

You know, one of us could probably help him remotely.

I don't typically recommend installing those spybot or adaware things. I've found that while they do work, they also open you up for more attacks.

Remotely, we probably could terminate and eliminate any system processes that shouldn't be running, edit the boot up processes to only what is necessary, water down the systray to keep the speed up and install firefox to avoid issues in the future. There are a lot of little things that can be done to speed up the machine.

No. You can always decide not to install it. Downloading it won't do anything.

Its not exactly like that. You could pull the plug on the whole thing if you ever got uncomfortable. Its simply a matter of someone else controlling the machine from a remote location. You can always regain control. In your case, go ahead and install and run the spyware program, I'm just not a fan of letting it run all the time. I'll use it to trouble shoot, but thats it.

I have accounts for logmein and cisco remote assistance if you are interested. I won't charge you anywhere near your 1k budget...

Oh, agreed. I don't have it running in the background (as far as I know). I just run the full scan once in a while to check over my system.

This whole thing is starting to sound crazy. Letting the Adams into your computer? It's not about where you have been. It's about where they would take it. Nuh-uh. F^%& that.

You have never run a spyware or virus scan? How about disk clean up and defragment? I have been using #1 and #5 from this list without issue for years. If I can keep a computer running with this, anybody can.

Imho Spyware scans are all good and all, but not really efficient anymore. Most of today's spyware evolved into one of two modes: Extremely annoying, blocking EVERYTHING from starting [See Antivirus 2009] or stealthy, in fact so stealthy - neither you or any antispyware app would ever detect them since they changed the core of your windows os (aka kernel) so basically becoming part of it - so Trust me, save yourself a lot of headache, money and trouble.

Backup all you important files, Find original System restore and do whole pc wipe and restore to original state...

This is basically what Best Buy's Geek Squad would do anyhow, but charge you $300 for this.
