Laptop to AV Receiver Help!!

This is driving me crazy. All I want to do is connect my laptop to my AV receiver so I can watch movies on it.

For some reason, I have picture and no sound. And I know a lot of people are having this issue. I tried changing cables, changing ports, updated the drivers even changed the hdmi audio driver, and made sure it was enabled, but nothing. However, I do get a signal on my computer's playback tab under HDMI Audio Out. Something is definitely going through but the receiver isn't picking it up. I thought HDMI cables ares supposed to carry both audio and visual content. I'll give you the stuff I'm working with:

Laptop: HP Pavilion DV6
HDMI Driver: Realtek HDMI Output: ATI HDMI Audio (the new driver after installed)
AV Receiver: Yamaha HTR-6130

Welcome to the Forum.

Your receiver does NOT play audio via HDMI. It is an HDMI passthrough switch only. See page 14 of your manual. You must also use an optical cable or stereo analog connections to get audio. This is not an issue with your laptop.

thanks for the quick reply. hmm. okay, I have an RCA (L/R) to 1/4 in. (headphone), but I only have aux input to use. That would make the audio and video (HDMI) on different inputs. I tried to input the laptop directly into the tv via HDMI connector, and used the aux input on the receiver for the audio but for some reason it did not work. However if I unplug the HDMI the sound comes out of the speakers fine.

Did you tried to connect your laptop to your tv with hdmi cable directly?
Did both video and sound worked?

I am fairly certain you cannot use an HDMI video input and the Aux audio input on the front. Page 48 of your manual has the instructions for assigning inputs. I would look at that and check your settings.

You could also run the HDMI to the tv and then use the aux jacks on the front of the receiver.

ok so i think i got it. sorta. i forgot to make speakers/headphones the default audio source. that being said my idea before worked. sound isn't as great as hd sound but it's decent. if anyone has another other suggestions they are welcome, otherwise thanks for all your help.
