We saw this tonight, in spite of lackluster reviews. I actually thought it was quite good. Bear in mind that it's a slow build with very little action but it's tense, well written with excellent cinematography. Kate Winslet is Adele, a depressed, divorced mom in a small town when Frank (Josh Brolin), a convicted murderer, escapes and abducts Adele and her teen son, wanting her to shelter him until he gets an opportunity to escape. The story gradually tells the back story of how Frank ended up in jail, while Adele finds herself engaged in life for the first time since her divorce. Her son, initially terrified of Frank, also begins to realize that Frank isn't the monster portrayed in the media and wanted posters.
This film is well acted, reasonably intelligent, tense and quite worth seeing if you're in the mood for an actor's movie. It's Henry, the son, who it telling the story years into the future, narrated by Toby Maquire. My guess is that this movie's reputation will grow when people realize that it's not an action movie and take a more balanced look....I give it a two-thumbs-up. The movie was written and directed by Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air, et al), shot in Massachusetts.
