How can I set up my speakers to get the best overall sound in this space? (Picture in link/URL at the bottom)

There are not 2 tvs in this room, I just have not decided in which space it will go.

The speakers I have are:
Center - axiom vp100 v2
Fronts - axiom M22 v2
Surrounds - axiom Qs8
subwoofer - will be either axiom ep175 or ep350 in the future.

Also thinking of going with an emotiva upa-7 or xpa-5 amp. any thoughts in amp purchase would be much appreciated.

Of the two options you have listed I would put the TV by the 9 foot wall with the M22s on either side and VP100 above or below it depending on what works best for you.

I would put the QS8s behind the sofa and love seat probably toward though not necessarily at the outer corner of each. If you have the ability this would be something you might want to test out with a couple ladders or something to see if you can find the best spot before you mount them. Even if you can’t use ladders you might try resting them on the backs of the loveseat and sofa on a large book or piece of wood. You can use some soup cans to prop them up so the lower speaker isn’t blocked. This might give you some idea of which placement will work better but experimenting with them at the actual height you plan to mount them is better. And based on how close to your seating they will be I would mount them up higher than lower.

You might benefit a little from going with 6.1 or 7.1 but I doubt the added cost would justify the improvement so I would suggest the XPA-5. If you did add rears I would defenatly put the surrounds near the outer edges of the loveseat and couch and put the rear speakers a about 1/3 of the way out along both the couch and loveseat from the back corner. Again I really don’t think the improvement would justify the cost.

Of course this all assumes that the layout is non-negotiable beyond the TV placement.

Dean

P.S. Just noticed you have a thread at the Axiom forum and agree with what Jakewash said to you there.

yep

furniture layout stays until we get the chance to clear or move some walls in the living room. we both figured that would probably be the best layout for now. any suggestion on a decent receiver was looking at onkyo 806 and yamaha 863 and 1800. or could go cheap receiver that decodes new formats and go emotiva amp.

Any decent receiver will work fine however if you know you really want the Emotiva amp then you might as well get it now since you’ll just be getting it later anyway. Since, due to technology advancing, you’ll probably be upgrading the processing side sooner than the power side why pay for more processor than you need only to later buy the amp you want.

Sorry I can’t give any recommendations on what receiver to get since I haven’t been looking at them for a couple years, but any major name brand should get the job done fine. You might want to post your budget and even start a separate thread on what receiver or receiver/amp combo to buy since the title of this thread may not catch the attention of those who know about the electronics. Whatever you do keeping in mind that having an upgrade path in mind can pay dividends down the road especially when you start moving walls.

Dean

I had the same issue with my L-shaped room (but mine also had an awkward wall right in the center of the room that was angled at 45 degrees) I had to make a choice I could either give up the fireplace and be able to watch TV or find some wierd way to set up the room with limited viewing and hard as hell speaker placemnet. I then thought how often would I actually use the fireplace, maybe once or twice a year. So i chose to place my sectional in front of the fireplace (it actually created a hallway of sorts between the fireplace and the back of the couch to the guest bedroom.

If you look at my pics. http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52880

check out second to last picture on page one and you will see that giving up the fireplace wasnt that big a deal. I would recommend the same thing, by moving your loveseat to the other isde of the table (blocking the fireplace) and moving your TV and HT system to the long wall. You will still have room to manuever around the loveseat and keep the fireplace open (just in the back of the room). You will have better speaker placement and although the room will appear smaller with the loveseat now in the center of the room, what you give up makes up for in better seating and viewing of the HT room.
