If you set the speakers to large, the speakers will not have a low pass filter on them. If you set them to small the low pass filter is activated. When I refer to low pass filter, I refer to the receiver's crossover. So if the receiver's x-over is set to 100Hz, and the fronts are set to small, the receiver will begin to roll off the bass frequencies at around 100Hz.
Just to be clear, the XO acts as a high pass filter for the signal sent to the mains, center and surrounds...and a low pass for the signal sent to the sub(s).

Yeah, I had my terms reversed. I was thinking in vintage terms with high and low CUT filters.

can you elaborate this a little more. I understand it but not really how you say it. If that makes sense.

In car audio you had to deal with crossovers too. Imagine this:

You have a Pioneer deck and a nice Alpine amplifier powering some subwoofers. The Pioneer is going to power your front and rear speakers. The Pioneer has a built in HPF (high pass filter) that is adjustable in the range of 50hz, 60hz, 80hz, 100hz, 120hz, and 150hz. What that HPF does is filter out the lowest frequencies from your 6"x9" and 5.25" speakers in front and sends that low frequency information out through the subwoofer preouts on the Pioneer to the Alpine. Because the Pioneer is performing the function of crossover the Alpine's x-over should then be set to the highest setting so it's roll off does not multiply the roll off from the Pioneer's crossover.

If you look at the graph below it will short of display what I mean by roll off.

As you can see the red and green lines dip down. The frequencies don't just cut off, they blend together.

Ok that makes sense. well i switched everything to large, which makes the lower frequencies go to my floor speakers insteading of passing them to the sub right? well I think on small they sounded better, I think. Theres a lot of settings, so when I have one preference its like it is gone the next minute.

Just keep toying with it.

I put in Iron Man blu ray last night and holy crap it sounded amazzzinggggggggg. i want to keep experimenting with this. Other than the two fronts, center, and sub..what else can I add to keep improving the sound.

You would certainly benefit greatly by adding surrounds. Maybe a new subwoofer if you feel yours is lacking.

I am building a new sub box tomorrow. coming from a extensive car audio background, I know how to build my own tuned boxes with aeroports and slot ports. I know for tuning for home audio it needs to go lower. I am looking forward to building this box. but I need some Klipsch speakers for my surround as well.
