Klipsch RF-82 / RF-62. Is it a good move?

Hello Folks,

I have Onkyo HT-RC260 receiver, Infinity PS 252 fronts, Infinity PC350 CS, and an Emotiva 12" sub. I always wanted to buy Klipsch speakers because based on what I have heard and seen, I think I love them. Want to bring them home.

Do you think Kilpsch will be a good addition to my existing setup or is that going to sound odd? How can I use my existing Infinities, can I use them as surround? I have no plans to replace my existing CS.

Which one would you suggest RF-82 or RF-62? My budget is 1000$

You could certainly use your existing speakers as surrounds. If you decide on the Klipsch speakers, you need to change your center channel to match. Your front sound stage will be very mismatched otherwise. You can also try using the Klipsch speakers without a center channel and see how you like it. You may find you don't even need to buy a center.

As for the RF-82 vs RF-62, I would try and listen to both to see which one you like better.

RF-82: 33Hz-23kHz +/-3dB and 98dB @ 2.83V / 1m
RF-62: 38Hz-23kHz +/-3dB and 97dB @ 2.83V / 1m

As you can see from above, the 82 will play lower and is more efficient. You just have to determine if you want to spend your budget on just the towers, or if you want to get a center channel to match.

Also, there are new version of those speakers out. They'll be marked with a "II" at the end of the name.

I owned the RF-82's and just compared the RF-52(II) to some EMP speakers this past weekend. I thought the little RF-52 II sounded very similar to the RF-82's I had owned. Keep in mind that the crossover on the 82's is much lower, meaning that compression driver has to do more work. I wasn't very impressed by either Reference series speaker. The Klipsch Reference line seems to have a colored and compressed sound to them. This is especially noticeable when directly compared to a more tonally neutral speaker.
