i listened to the b&W's again today. i also listened to the b&W CM7. this souned much cleaner than the 683 and not as much in your face. the strings and voice were that much tighter, however, it lacked bass and needed a sub to "rock". In going back and forth between the 683 and cm7, i liked the 7 sound better overall.

I still need to drive the hour and listen to the digms and b&w side by side.

anyone have any thoughts on the CM7?

From what I've read, the CM7 seems to produce a more neutral, less bright sound than the 683, but with flatter bass (specs below confirm). It seems they are on the same level and it comes down to preference. Some like the 683s more and vice versa.

Also, the CM7 doesn't come in black, which might be a deal breaker for some.

683: 38Hz - 22kHz ±3dB on reference axis
CM7: 62Hz - 22kHz ±3dB on reference axis

The CM7's are better speakers, but more costly. They are manufactured in lower numbers and too a higher standard with higher quality parts (hence the cost). CM series is probably better Studio series, and I think the contemporary look is much sexier. The CM7 uses the Nautilus tweeter and midrange that's seen throughout the 800 series.

the color choice is not an issue as i will probably get the cherry or "dark" stain.

the 7's are the same price as the studio 60's. they are both laminate box's, however, i agree the 7 are super sexy and much better looking.

quality wise are the 7's much better? the salesman at this store was really cool. I got the owners son who was all excited that we were rocking them, but he didn't know much in comparison with the digms or how much of the tech came from the 800 series. could these be similar to what an 800 series was in the 70's with trickle down technology? I liked this guy. Much nicer than the first digm store guy who was like "these are the best".

thanks again for all the replies.

Klipsch, Paradigm

own set of both.....when Paradigm is able to improve their market share, Klipsch will buy them like Energy and Mirage and the price will come down to where it belongs....

the local digm guy was just rude. His feeling was "i have them and you want them, so which one's". he also wasn't knowledgable on the competition. I was asking about subs and he just pushing the digm sub. Made me think that he got a really good deal on the digm stuff.

The bw guy was as i said before very nice. he was young, but was very helpful in listening to alot of stuff. I would buy from him.

Neither of the dealers knew about the other speaker.

There is another dealer that is 1 hr away and he carries both. so i need to get to him.

What makes the CM7 so much better than the 683? same tweeter but different mid, bass and cross over. now the CM9 is out but above my $.

I heard a SVS sub at a local guys house today and for the price, it is nicer that the velodyne. so i think i am set there (PB-12 plus or 13 ultra) now back to the fronts???

does anyone think that the power from the 4308 (140w) is too small to power the low 88db of the 7 properly? i plan on bi-amping the fronts with the 5.1 so that will give me 280. The 683 is 90db.

the problem is that they each has a good point. too bad i didn't have 10k more to spend on speaker!!!
