I've been holding off a new TV purchase waiting for all the new 1080P sets to come out.

I was especially interested in the JVC D-ILA models. Here are the anticipated prices from JVC's website:

Model Approximate Retail Price Available

HD-56FH96 $4,000 October 2005
HD-61FH96 $4,500 October 2005
HD-70FH96 $6,000 October 2005

I just got off the phone with my retailer who is expecting sets in next week and was quoted $8999 for the 70" model...a whopping $2999 increase!

What's the deal with that????

I noticed that as well while searching the JVC models. The only conclusion I could come up with is that those prices are from a press release that was made quite awhile ago (6-12 months I think). The same thing happened with the sony qualia 006, they had originally claimed a price of under $10,000 but it was released at $13,000. Since LCoS isn't produced by many companies (JVC and Sony being the only major players), it doesn't get the amount of tweaks that the DLP platform receives (since DLP is used by so many manufacturers, it has had hundreds and hundreds of individual tests by producers to maximize its performance and effectiveness). Just my speculation mixed in with other people's speculation. Plus, as long as each manufacturer appeals to its own consumer market (Qualia = high end, WEGA = wannabe high end, JVC = main stream consumer), they can mess with the prices quite a bit I'm guessing. Like the oil companies, right?

On a side note, I actually saw an online e-tailer offering the 1080p model on pre-order for LESS than the 720p model. What is the deal with THAT?
