All I can say is, well, WTF???

Don't waste your time or money. I've never seen such a pretentious, symbol laden, disjointed piece of garbage that went nowhere since I don't know when.

I can't believe Hugh Jackman signed on to this... This movie could, single-handedly, destroy his reputation.

Have you seen any of Aronofski's other films? Most notably Pi and Requiem for a Dream? If you had, you would have known what to expect going in. I was actually a little disappointed with it also, simply because it was exactly what I expected and that was what was most surprising. We felt it was a little "soft" compared to his previous work which I really enjoyed and felt were excellent (but weird). I actually liked it, but I had hoped for more of an experience with this film.

I wouldn't go so far as to say don't waste your money, but I would say it is probably a rental for most. If you are familiar with his films, then you may want to see it in the theater.

Opened Friday. Interesting, but odd as always from Aronofski. He is a very good director IMO, though I think he was looking to do something a little more mainstream than his previous "art house" and short films.

That seems to heve been my mistake.

I was totally unfamiliar with his work. We were intrigued by the trailers that seemes to indicate more of a "mainstream" type movie dealing with a "linear" love affair over a "linear" period of time, owing to the magical properties of "The Fountain".

But no. The only one who came out ahead and happy in this movis was the monkey.

He likes to have many layers to his story, often paralleling the main story, and I'm sure I will pick up more little things on subsequent viewings when it comes out on DVD. Aronofsky's stuff is not what I would call mainstream for sure. There were a lot of points being made about life and death and how we [humans] typically percieve them and deal with them as well as the futility of the quest for "immortality". The number of layers makes this movie hard to describe, but from what I've seen, few directors capture human nature as well as he does. It is like looking directly into someone's dreams - disjointed, but still telling a story; you understand what happened, but what does it all mean?

What was discovered with the monkey could ultimately benefit all of mankind, so no, the monkey wasn't the only one...
