I recently returned the S550 because I could not make it advance frame by frame in pause mode. That became the dealbreaker for me because frame by frame advance through some special effects scenes, as well as certain other *cough* special *cough* scenes, is something that I really enjoy. The BD35 will perform this function, so that's the one I kept.
It works for me, but I'm using a Harmony 1000 remote.

I believe the mutichannel is only for analog. Since you're using HDMI just bitstream everything from the s550 to your reciever. The setting in the players are IMO basically futile, just use the setting you've already calibrated in your receiver.:)
Thanks

I'm using a 3805 via analog and it sounds awesome, but how do we know what signal is being outputed? My receiver just shows multi and analog and I wonder if yours displays the same .
PS: It may be worth the money one day just to see that displayed:D.
Regards, Bill :)

Interesting. I have a Harmony remote also but I didn't try it with the Sony. I just assumed that if it wouldn't do it with it's own remote, it wouldn't do it with the Harmony. I couldn't find that feature in the manual either. At least I saved a few bucks anyway, I guess.

Here's an interesting discovery I've made using this player. I have a handfull SD DVDs that would "skip" scenes on my old player, but the S550 plays them without a hitch. Not sure why, but that's great IMO.:)

Quick question and I apologize it may seem to be a stupid question but on the audio setup do I want multichannel analog in the audio output priority setting or is that for when your not running everything threw a HDMI cable like I am, Because I Noticed in order to do the speaker setting option like large or small and distance ect it wont let you unless your in that mode"multichanel analog" . I know my speaker distances and size are already setup threw my pioneer but I was just curious if I still needed to do that with my sony bd player also. Everything sounds amazing and I beleive i've got it pretty much dialed in but thats just something that was on my mind . Thanks in advance.
If you are outputting from your player through HDMI, you are outputting an unprocessed digital signal that will be processed and decoded by your receiver.
If you are outputting from your player via analog outs, you are sending out an analog signal that has already been processed and decoded by your BD player.
That's why your BD player is only doing the speaker settings through the analog outputs.

Factor and HMBMD: Please try frame-by-frame advance on your S550s and let us know if it works.

Yes my frame by frame works and there was a option in the setup menu That gives you that option. I thought frame-by-frame was a slow motion type thing but I guess it is what it is Frame-by-frame and yes it does work, I kinda like it. Its great for backing up tp a part in the movie without passing it up and visualy seeing were you want to stop instead of the counter . Im also just using the sony remote that came with it . Im very impressed thus far with the performance of this player and its very fast loading and with commands.

I tried the pause mode option in the setup menu in each setting and no matter what I couldn't get a frame by frame to work. It wouldn't surprise me if I got the only defective S550 on the market. I've had terrible luck of the draw getting units that just don't work the way they're supposed to.

I purchased the s550 on Black Friday. I am using the analog outputs for multichannel audio into an older Yamaha HTR 5635 and the sound and picture are fantastic. You have to try "Wanted" which has an aggressive DTS-MA soundtrack with an unbelievable mix of effects and low end sound.I have the player set up for BD-Live but I am not too impressed with this gimmick yet because nothing is close to HD quality and no streaming content is available. The XBox360 is much better for this type of content by far. I have one question: How do I get audio in my PIP window? Is there a special setting or priority that has to be set in the audio menus? So far I am very impressed with the player and this evaluation is from a person who still uses two HDDVD players.
