Just ordered a Denon 2910...

...I've been using the "poke it with a stick" method to look for a new dvd player for about six months, as mines been slowly acting more and more 'odd.' I was looking for better prices on the 1920 and found a 2910 for a price I can live with, $400. Honestly its a little more than I wanted to spend right now, but I think I'll be happy with it. I missed the boat (again) on the 1920 for $225 delivered, and it was going to cost me $270 now. For the extra $130 I decided to go with the better model.

Most of what I found out about the 1920 told me that to look for a 2910 for better sound, and that's what my primary concern is. I have never been fully satisfied with the sound performance of my Pioneer dv578a. It's always been good enough for video for me.

Anyway, I'm I can live with the cost and now I am very impatiently waiting for the brown truck to arrive. It's already been about 10 minutes, how much longer can it possibly take?...:D

I just had a chance to move from my 2910 to the 3910. Haven't been home for a couple of weeks (working in Alaska), but the box has arrived. I'm going to stack these two units and do an audio & video face-off to see if I wasted my money again. The 3910 is thicker & more expensive, so naturally, it should be better, right?

400 for a 2910 is over 100 less than dealer cost. Not a bad deal if its new with a warranty. ;)

I've only had a couple of hours to get things set up for a listening comparison (read: with the wife out of the house), but my initial evaluation was very pleasing. (Hey, mtrycrafts, don't kill me with your unassailable dbt logic. This is just a sighted A/B test with the same discs)
I listened to the SACD of Dire Straits' "Brothers in Arms" feeding the analog output of the 2910 and DenonLink of the 3910 into my 4306. Using my RatShack dB meter, I set the levels to match on the 4306's dB scale.
My honest impression is that they both sounded terrific, but the 3910 was noticeably more "3-dimensional", if I had to give it a description. The different elements in the recording seemed to have more definition and detail. I was careful not to consume any adult beverages during this test, therefore enabling me to justify having spent $900 on a universal player just as the new HD players are hitting the market.
I may be delusional, but that Denon stack sure looks *****in' on my stand!

Nice unit, I had thought about picking up one of those, but I just couldn't justify the price difference at this point in time for me. I'm more curious as to if there is any noticeable difference between the analog outputs of each device. The DenonLink is supposed to send a much better signal than the analog output, so it is not an apples to apples comparison of sound, from that aspect. I'd like to hear what you think of the video performance between the two, also. So far, it sounds like you are pretty happy with the purchase.

Thanks
Jack

Yeah, if you're using Denonlink, you're using the receiver's DACs (and bass/time management settings/capabilities) to decode the 3910 info as opposed to the 2910's DACs (and bass/time menagement settings/capabilities) via the analog outs.

I had the 2200 and the 2900 and I can say that they sounded nearly identical except when it came to SACD for similar reasons via analog. DVD-A did seem a little better, but I couldn't tell. Video was a toss up, as they both use basically the same video section (though the 2900 had a few more tweaks available).

WooHoo! just got it!

All I can say is, WOW! what an improvement overall. This just replaced my Pioneer dv-578a, pretty good for $100 @ BB 3yrs ago. But definately not in the same league.

So far I watched Saving Private Ryan & Grand Prix (two totally bada$$ movies) and listened to some regular cds and sacd.

Weight: The 2910 weighs a little under 12 lbs vs 4lbs for the 578a.

Picture: Much, sharper and with more detail. Though not extremely better. The detail is especially noticeable when zooming. I zoomed into a scene in the beginning of Grand Prix that shows people in the stands as cars zoom by. With the older unit zooming was fuzzy and blurred at 4x. with the 2910 it is still usable at 4x, though slightly pixelated, but I can easily make out much more detail. The 2910 has a little more noticeable jaggies throughout, though the overall picture is more detailed. I think the jaggies are there with the 578a, just not as noticeable due to a less clear picture. I'll have to recheck some specific scenes this weekend.

Audio on Movie: Not much difference for Grand Prix but very noticeable on Saving Private Ryan. The surrounds really come alive with the 2910, much more detailed in sound, something that had always irritated me with the 578a. No matter how much I turned up the surrounds, they always seemed kind of muted to me. With the 2910 I really feel more like I'm in the film, what surrounds are supposed to do. Yes, both units were properly level matched to begin with.

CD: Night and day. I listened to Iron Maiden's Powerslave. Five and a half minutes into the last track, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, there are some boat creaking noises that I was unable to hear unless I turned the volume up too loud to comfortably listen to with the 578a. Plus, the music through it always sounded a little flat, as in there was a something between me and the speaker. The 2910 offered those creaks easily at regular volume and gave a much more robust sound, the music really came alive.

SACD, I listened to some classical music. while it seemed cleaner, I wouldn't swear it wasn't in my head, It wasn't a night/day kind of thing. I'll listen to Dark side of the Moon this weekend, back to back to compare the two.

This is all subjective and my personal observations, they may be tainted. This weekend I'll hook both units up and borrow some movies I have from a friend so I can switch back and forth between units to see just how different it actually is. No I don't plan on doing any DBT's with a team of trained scientists in an anechioc room with zillions of dollars of specialized equipment while myself, a monkey, a rat, two white mice and a guinea pig watch unknowing material while PETA protests outside. So don't ask. ;) :D

Not to dis your gear...well I guess I can now because you got rid of it.:) .the Pioneer 578a is an absolute POS and the Denon 2910 is in a different stratosphere. I auditioned that Pioneer and many Yamaha products. The Pioneer is a welfare player. Plain and simple. Picture is garbage and the sound as well. It played SACD, and not very well. That's why people thought it was, or is, so great. It's so light it felt like it was going to blow away. The Yamaha 657a kills it for not much more money.

No offense taken, I've never been fully satisfied with the Pioneer dv-578a. Since the day I got it I thought the sound and PQ were no where near as good as my old RCA unit it replaced (I forget the model number, but it sold for $750 in '97 or '98? & weighed a lot more). The Pioneer had lots of great features, and was highly recommended online for it's price point. I picked it up for $100 on close out at BestBuy, and it served its purpose. The first time I thought the poor surround sound quality must be in my head is when I saw it listed on this site as an alternate player in the recommended $5k system. Then when I searched, I found fairly good reviews for it at its price point. I think my previous unit was higher quality than it was and I may have been spoiled by that. Even though I was never fully happy with it, I would still recommend it as a decent universal player for $100.

All that being said, I'm real happy so far with my new 2910.:) :) ;) :)

Hey johnny canuck, how do you like your panasonic plasma TV, I am shopping for one and that one really caught my eye both on reviews online and in the store (although in the store every HDTV looks like crap to me, maybe they arent playing HD or dont have connections right but the pictures never look sharp. Anyways, whats your honest opinion??

I love my Panny plasma. I wish I had a little bigger, like the 50" but in a plasma, 8" is alot more money. On regular TV, it's not great. You have to watch it at 480i. A tube is still by far the best for that. But when I watch HD, everyone who sees it says it's the best picture they have ever seen. Not kidding. Where I bought it, they purposely make it look "bad", if there is such a thing as it out sells the other brands 3-1. I know the salesmen very well. It seriously is a great TV. I got a smokin deal on it. $2800 Canadian a year ago. It was $4000 at the store. I was alittle worried about the myth of plasma burn in. The store leaves it on all the time, no burn in whatsoever. Was an issue on the first and second generation plasmas, not these ones.

Get it.
