This is a 115 watt per channel mosfet power amp, from 1979 or so. Does anyone have any experience with these? I have it running the speakers in my kitchen, but I think they may sound better than when I was driving them with the Denon, and I'm thinking of using it for my mains instead. I'll have to spend some quality time with it, but can this old thing really upstage the 20+ years newer Denon?

They have a pretty good reputation among the budget amplifiers. I don't know if they do much if anything now, but they where good in their day.

I've got several still running from some time ago... I'd recommend replacing the caps inside, be sure the input connections are clean on the rear (appears that they are if your getting clean sound) and keep it ventilated as it will run warm. I think the DH200/220 are still one of the better buys if you can get them under $200...

One more nod of approval for Hafler amps

I know several people who have older Haflers, either the DH200 or the DH220. They were originally very good when they were new, and many are on the used market, usually at a bargain price. This is true for any of the older Hafler amps, made when David Hafler owned the company. They are said to be very stable amps when driving low impedance speakers.

Yes, you should definitely try this amp on your main speakers.

For what it's worth, one the guys on the original Hafler design team, Frank Van Alstine, is still around and in business with his own line of amplifiers, preamps, and other electronics. See Audio by Van Alstine. His products are generally said to be excellent. I've only heard one of his solid state amps, and I have to agree with the general opinion.

Van Alstine does refurbish older Hafler amps. The price is not low, but if you ever need repairs, that would be the best place to go.
