Hi people ! I went out yesterday and bought my self the HD72 Projector. all seems good untill I noticed it doesnt have any type of lens shift.

I no this is 100% my falut and I should look in to these things more B4 I buy but I really did fall in love with it when I went for a demo with my dad, and he offerd to pay half as it was my birthday comming up so I said YES !!.

any way I cant play round with my projector at the minute as the mrs isnt happy with it so I have to wait till she goes back to work on tuesday... But as you can imagine I am pulling my hair out wondering if I have bought the wrong projector for my room ......... Please if there is a lord out there let me be lucky just this once !!!

I was hopeing if I was to give you some measurments of my room and were I plan to fit everything you can point me int he right direction whether it will look ok or I am the thickest person on this planet !!!

First off I havet orderd my screen yet as I was unsure what size would fit in my bay window - free screen offer thou when I bought it so I have the option of 77" or 92".

ok the size of my front room is

13 feet = vertical

10 feet = horizontal

7 feet = Ceiling Height

I was hopeing to place the HD72 on my wall just above my head on my coach or maybe if desperate neck hight so me and the mrs are sitting iver side of it.

It would need to be "adleast" 3 Feet from the floor but 4 or 5 feet would be much better.

the distance from were I would want to put the PJ to my screen can be between 11-13 feet

The screen I will be using will be 16.9

as another idea I might be able to put the PJ just under my coach with the lens just popping out but that would cut the distnace down to about 9-10 feet.. if that would work better, but wouldnt be the best thing as I have 2 cats who would no dout try to make love to it or somethen.

as you can see I am up to any changes or new ideas..

is there any way I can make this work ?????

possible to tilt the PJ downwards and use this keystone trick ?

thanks to any one who takes the time out to translate all this mombo jumbo and point me in the right direction...

cant thank you anuff !

You do have some serious issues to contend with on that projector as it is not exactly the most setup friendly projector on the market. Read this review...

http://www.projectorcentral.com/optoma_hd72.htm

Now, the review gets into it, but the bottom line is that with a 100" diagonal 16:9 screen you are looking at having the projector either 18" above or below the screen to avoid the need for keystone correction. Lens itself great for 9'+ ceilings, but is tough in almost every other situation. Very - VERY lousy design on their part.

Yet, to get the projector up and out of harms way I would still ceiling mount it as close to the ceiling as possible and run it that way. You must NEVER block the circulation around a projector so under the couch is pretty much crazy talk. :D

The ceiling is good because it gets the noise away from the people seated, it gives the projector room to breathe and you won't bump it and knock it out of alignment by mistake.

As for screen size, I would probably go with the 92" width (width?) and have a 106" diagonal if you are seated at the back of the 13' foot wall. That's about right for viewing... Unfortunately, the projector is going to be VERY tight against the rear wall for that setup. If the screen is free, then I would still probably get the larger size and just project a bit smaller - invert mounting the projector on the ceiling right near the rear wall. Keep ventilation in mind ALWAYS!!!

With that setup though, you will still need to use digital keystone correction which is unfortunate, but a must in that room. It should still look killer though and should be a lot of fun.

A little help?

First off there are a couple things I would do! Read the review at
www.projectorreviews.com/Manufacturers/optoma/HD72/index.asp
This will help you understand this projector. The other thing I would
do is go to www.projectorcentral.com/projection-calculator-pro.cfm
and go through the steps to see what fits your situation.

Have you ruled out a ceiling mount? Will you have control of your
ambient light? The HD72 is a bright projector, so it should do fine
even with some ambient light.

Do not put your $2000 projector under the couch! It is very important
that they are allowed to cool properly. Good luck and let me know what
you think of the HD72.:)

Hi well i never thought of a ceiling mount as I thought you couldnt put this projector that high.

2 be honest I dont no it could work with a ceiling mount as how would it project the image downwards as its set to project upwards. ??

considering just sending it back and buying aLCD with lens shift like the Z4 or TX200. have measuerd were I want to put the screen and I will only be able to fit a 77" or 80" screen diagnal.

You flip projectors upside down when you ceiling mount them. There is a setting in the menu that flips the image right side up.

The screen diagonal is good and you would need to move the projector a bit closer to the screen. This will also allow the screen to be about 1 foot or so from the ceiling - which may prove to be about perfect.

I'm not sure that I would return it... As it will work. I would also consider the image from DLP to be a bit better than you typically see from LCD. Just keep asking questions and planning the setup so everything goes smoothly.

Definitely worth trying to get it to work in the room.

Don't give up!

The HD72 can definetly be ceiling mounted. It does have a lens
offset of 6.52 degrees which means depending on your ceiling
height and screen size, you may have to mount the screen a
little lower than normal. I would think for your screen size that
shouldn't be a problem. Let us know how it turns out. :)

Can I make the HD72 work?

I too am very interested in the HD72, but have a little
different situation. I have a 7 1/2' h ceiling
and would like to use a 106"d screen. The room is
25'L but has a beam that runs across that supports
the floor above. It is 11 1/2' from where the screen
would be and hangs down about 8" and is 10"w.
I would guess that the projector would be mounted
between 12-14ft from the screen. The question is this? In
a normal ceiling mount application, would the lens offset
be enough to miss the beam? The other question is
where would the top of the screen have to be? I will
probably call Optoma and see what they say. I don't
think I could afford to hang this projector any lower or
my screen will be on the floor!

ct: The top of the screen would be about 19" below the centerline of the lens... which means that it would be about 23 or 24 inches from the ceiling.

The front of the lens must be placed 12.2 to 14.6 feet from the screen.

Hd72

Thanks BMX;) Do you think using a normal ceiling mount that the
projector beam would miss the wood beam? With the offset, it could be
possible. Even if it does, dropping the top of a 58.6"h (includes frame)
screen down 24", only leaves me about 12" from the floor to the bottom of the screen frame. Another projector would probably be better for my application as I could suspend it just low enough to clear the beam but still keep the top of the screen in the 16" range. :)

Hi again !!

I have taken some pictures of my front room were I plan to setup the HD72i.

Just to give you more of a idea. and hopefull you will not spot any probelms.

1. This is a front view of were I would like to put my screen.. I am selling my plasma to my dad to make room for the HD72. I plan on moving the curtains a little higher and the fancy curtains at the side I will tighten up and move them over more.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c27/jamieuk23/fullfront.jpg

2. Ok this is were we will be sitting.

Height of the ceiling = 8 feet

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c27/jamieuk23/sittingarea.jpg

3. Picture of the celing were I hope to mount the PJ.. will be moving picture of the wall etc.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c27/jamieuk23/PJ.jpg

4. I have roled the front curtians up here.... As you will see there is a another celing underneath the main celing which measures 7 feet. If I was able to fit my screen under here it would give me a extra 2 feet in lengh from my back wall were I want to mount the PJ to the screen. which should let me use a 92" screen rarther than 77" which I will dout have to use if I put it directly under the curtains.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c27/jamieuk23/curtainsup.jpg

For me to able to use a 92" screen the screen cant go any lower than were the black line is drawn as you will notice were the red is the wall comes out under the window.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c27/jamieuk23/fullfrontpencil.jpg

so what do you think ?? is this possbile ??

If you need me to take any more measurments just let me no.

celing height = 8 feet

celing height were windows are = 7 feet

distance from back seating wall just below the curtains = 11 feet.

Full distance from back wall to windows = 13 feet

thanks for any help !!
