The Sony HT-DDW790 was on sale recently and I had a Best Buy gift card so I decided to buy one. I've got the receiver hooked up and for the moment have the center and front speakers along with the sub woofer connected. When I listen to the radio on the receiver it seems like the volume is louder than when I'm just watching regular TV. For example, I have the volume set at 40 and the radio seems to be at the right volume but when I switch to the TV mode it sounds quieter. Right now I have an RCA plug connected from the back of the receiver in the SAT plugins to the back of my Dish Network box's L and R audio outs. I'm not sure what is the best way to connect my receiver for TV listening for maximum sound quality. Some of the Best Buy reviewers are saying that you have to use the digital inputs to improve the sound but I'm not sure how. The receiver has an optical plugin but I'm not seeing a corresponding one on my TV or cable box or DVD player. Something doesn't seem right when I'm having to raise the volume of the speakers to 50 out of 70-75 to get the sound at a comfortable level. Also, the HT came with a coaxial cable that goes from the receiver to my DVD player. Besides using that what else do I need to have connected for DVD viewing? Shouldn't I only need to have a yellow video cord going to my TV from my DVD player? What all does the coaxial cable do? I know this is a long one but I'm coming here because you guys know this stuff inside and out.
Here's an example of what one of the reviewers had to say:
"Those who are complaining about low sound output are not hooking up to the correct inputs. The sound is amazing for this price! I hooked up my cable DVR to the optical digital input and my DVD with to the coaxial digital input with the included cable. I use the basic audio inputs for my satelite receiver and cd jukebox. A few small adjustments to the equalizer and the system cranks....... yes, the surround speakers, too (read the manual if you think the sound is too low... you can boost any/all of the speakers). Distortion free, full, rich sound, even at MAX volume. I think some people are hooking up using their TV output. BIG MISTAKE, and those are probably the same people who say it's not loud enough. You can change the display of the inputs to match your component. I made mine say FiOS TV, BlueRay, etc. (again, read the manual.... there are many options). True, the speaker wires are permentantly connected to the speakers, but seriously, how much can you do for this price?? Amazing deal and one of the best purchases ever. I plan on getting another one for the game room."
