I have a long dressor in my room its heght is maybe to my waist I was thinking if it would be possible if i build a box that this dressor can sit on top of and put a few 10's in there.

I figure since the dressor is deep and wide i can probally make the height of the box maybe 12-14 inches.

i attached a quick sketch just so u can get an idea.

the only thing i am concerned about is what kind of noise the dressor may produce from the vibrations

I think if done nicely it would look great plus really take up no usable room since the dressor is there anyway.
What do u think?

This sounds like a very fun project with the need of some expertise. It is possible to port a sub behind the dresser. and build a box below it. But you will need to use some very strong and well braced joints.

What is the length and width of the dressor and what is the maximum height you want to go to.

Thanks for the reply

I am actually in the middle of building a different diy jl 13W1 box at the moment.

This just poped up in my head one day as I was looking at my dresser.
I dont have dimensions right now since im at work. I will measure it once I get home.

Why cant you port the box in the front?

I am not looking for a kit to modify but thank you for the idea.

There are actually two dressers one is longer then the other I would have to put a box under both to keep them level.
My dad had these dressers custom made when I was in high school so they are built very solid it’s not something that came from Ikea

I will take pictures over the weekend of the dresser and post them with measurements.

I was thinking maybe something like the new JLw0's, since I will need several of them. I know people will give me crap for saying JL's but I have no intentions of buying any other brand.

Thanks

You can Port the front of the box as well, but since your putting it under a dresser you could hide the port behind the dresser. :)

Might give you some extra length.

Do you have the TS paramaters for your driver?

Also if you are interested in seeing the possibilities of using the back of a dresser as a port I could see what kind of response you get.

I can model a box for you in WinISD Pro.

He is talking about the JL W7 there, I was referring to the JL W0's.
From reading around here I believe the only JL audio speaker Wmax is a fan of it the W7.

This might sound kinda silly, but, give your cabinet a few good wacks with your fist and listen to how much it rattles. Drawers and rollers and stuff are usually fairly loose and might make some noises if they were coupled to a subwoofer driver.

Like i said i am currently in the middle of another diy sub.
This is not something that is going to happen soon it was just an idea.

I hear what you are saying by hitting the dresser to see if I hear any noise.

I am one that likes things to look even for the most part. one dresser is about 48" wide the other matching is about 30" inches wide. both 19" deep.

I can put 2 under the 48" and 1 under the 30" I guess. I am only considering looks right now if I dont like how it will look I will not build it. I will worry about internal volume later, Since I have the Height as a variable I can adjust to get the correct internal volume.

Ideal situation would be that both dressers are the same length or a multiple so if one is 30 the other is 60.

thanks for the replies guys

Pete,

FYI, I modeled the W0 as soon as the specs were available, and they are not looking promising for home DIY projects :(

The dresser can be decoupled with some industrial type resilient foam rubber.

I modeled it as well and I don't suggest the W0 series. :(

For what it is worth, the W1v2 series drivers all model quite well. The smaller you go, the higher the tuning frequency (none go above 25hz tune though). The model very flat in reasonably sized enclosures.
