JBL Reciever blown?

A work collegue brought in a JBL DCR600II that wasn't working. His neighbor gave it to him. Seems the guy was running some speaker with through a hole in the wall and ran it into 120VAC. (Why was the other end still connected to the reciever?) Anyway, there was a loud pop. No smoke or flames .
I've built a few speakers systems and a Heathkit amp back in the day so I guess I am the closest thing at work to an expert. It does power up for a few seconds and then turns off. There is a relay that I hear switch on and back off. This relay is near the speaker out terminals. There is a bottom access panel on the bottom I removed and didn't see and fried traces. On top I don't see any fried or melted conponets or wires. The access panel didn't uncover the area directly under the speaker outputs.
I assume the relay is a speaker protection circuit. Can we just replace the relay? The circuit board would be a major pain to remove. Is this thing toast? I did a little research on this unit and I see its part of the 'theater' system enter level.

Can you clarify this a little?

IIRC, it seems a speaker cable was, at one end, connected to a speaker output on the receiver, while the other end was of that same speaker cable was plugged into 120VAC?

Is this correct?

My understanding is that the original owner was fishing the speaker wire through a wall and contacted an AC source. Not exactly plugged into an outlet. But ,yes 120VAC came back through the speaker terminal. Don't know which one. Doesn't seem to matter. I did a little more research. This think is pretty cheapo. Not really worth much brand new.

Hi,
I just posted a new thread about troubleshooting a JBL DCR600II receiver. I had noticed that old thread, and was wondering if you ever were able to fix your unit. What was the culprit and how would you suggest to fix it? I found the service manual if you want it, just let me know your email since file is too large to post here. Thanks so much, Michael
