I've done a horrible beautiful wonderful thing

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, work let me go an hour or two early today. I cut my tounge and when it was done bleeding it started swelling and hurt like an sob and made me talk wierd and drool. Fan-f'n-tastic day. (if you must know I had a nail in my mouth while holding up my bosses new gate for him to drill into a post when his wife opened the door directly behind me and drove my face into the board dirctly in front of me, only a small scrape and I'm fine but they felt horrible and told me to go get it looked at) I almost missed poker night tonight. With how fast I lost I should have stayed home. Oh well, won last week.

Anyways to your question. The answer is it really depends. Marantz products have a universal warranty that I've been told by someone at Marantz Canada will be valid up here. Most Canadian arms of American companies will not honour American warranties and that is a big factor for me as the Marantz has a three year warranty. Marantz used to be distributed by Lenbrook up north where we are, same guys who distribute NAD and PSB. I don't know for sure now who does what, but there is now a Canadian Marantz website.

That said I'm saving about $1000 on the receiver, so unless some incredible $1100 catastrophy occurs then it may well have been worth it to buy this guy without a warranty and take my chances with a failure. Another thing to watch out for is if it's possible for you to visit Washington then you can get your products delivered to your Aunts and pick them up and drive them home. That can be good because often times shipping, even for really heavy stuff, within the US is free while they charge a butload to ship to us. If you were to get 100lb speakers shipped from Say Florida to BC it could cost you $100 US or more to ship them, but they may be free to get shipped to Washington. Yeah, ya still gotta pay GST and PST at the border but there is no disbursment fee or brokerage fee and electronics manufactured in the US are entitled to a duty break that you can get at the border but you won't be able to explain that to the UPS delivery guy who doesn't know and doesn't care about your exemptions. Savings here can be pretty big believe it or not.

For myself I wouldn't buy a sophisticated electronics devie without a warranty for more than half the sticker cost delivered. But just look at some of the sites out there in the US. Take Ubid.com. That's where I got my receiver. Right now they have a Denon 2105 refurb on with a 90 day warranty. They are selling it for $358 us. By the time you get that shipped to your Aunt's and then to you you're lookingat maybe $650 CAD tops after all taxes and import fees. That receiver has an MSRP of $1100 Cad which works out to $1265 after our lovely tax. thats a savings of over $600, Let's say that a local dealer will sell you one for 25% off MSRP. That still comes to over $1000 after taxes and you'll still save at least $350. Now you don't have a warranty though, but is that warranty worth $350, and can you get a 25% discount? I guess it's really a numbers game. Many would take the odds.

Sorry if I'm rambling on, I had to take a couple of pills for the mouth. It tore open when I ate diner. I hope I was helpful in there somewhere though.

Thanks for all the great info, Takeereasy. I had a feeling there was a deal to be had there somewhere. :)

I can't believe you're saving yourself $1000, that's awesome! I've been checking out some of the US sites and drooling over the prices myself, but had no idea savings could be that great. I agree with you concerning warranty: if you can buy at that price, who gives a rat's a$$ about a warranty. I'm going to keep shopping around and talk to my sister in-law about this.

Thanks again.

Oh ya ... almost forgot. Take care of that tongue, eh? ... and don't forget to take your meds. ;)

late reply but..

spend a month sewing her her a summer dress.. or buy her a pair of expensive *** gold ugly earings.

something that takes a lot of effort or money.. that she will hate. then she will know what its like to get a present that you have to pretend to enjoy.

then when she tells you how much your present sucks.. you wont feel so bad telling her that hers sucked too.

That is so giggidy giggidy cruel. I'm nominating Jetyi for best avatar. Quagmire is the Don of repugnence.

It's a good idea, only my feelings for her and the desire to keep breathing through my nose stop me from saying things like, "I hate the gift you pulled double shifts to buy me." We're over this, the receiver is going to pull duty in an as yet to be determined 2nd system, probably a two channel. I'm not allowed to buy anything for it until I finish up the main one. All I need now is the Sub, the DVD player, and the jade monkey which I must have before the next full moon.

Takeereasy, in regards to your Girlfriend you got off easy.

I can only say that I have fallen onto the dark path only to come out burned and battered.

The posts were hilarious.

But honestly, truth is the best policy.

Re: Women find out everything in the end!

I am married now so I have only these three things to pass on to my fellow brothers:

1. Yes dear
2. I'm sorry dear
3. It will never happen again dear.

If you memorize it and use appropriately you just might make it to your Depends wearing years.

Good Luck.

You left out the golden saying.

"You're right dear."

I know I got off lucky, she's a good girl, I wouldn't be with any other kind. The receiver still hasn't come yet, and she seems to be getting some pleasure in watching me squirm. (it is supposed to clear customs tomorrow, fingers and toes crossed.)

DONT get married. If your girlfriend is gonna sweat out you buying a receiver to replace the crappy one she got you .. imagine how she is gonna sweat out you going to Vegas with your buddies .. or setting up a media room.

Time for a new girlfriend. :)

Now keep in mind, I have three kids (ages 6 2 and 1) and a fourth one on the way, due in December :(, so I wish I practiced what I am preaching. I love my kids ... but Ill never be able to leave my wife 8).

If you find yourself in a rut with your wife (girlfriend who is like a wife), like I am in, the only recourse left to you is to buy her something, or let her buy something, everytime you buy yourself something. Unfortunately, this last option sucks up a lot of $, but it does let you sleep peacefully in your media room .. with the best things you could ever get for yourself .. your kids. :)

Actually she's all for me going to Vegas when I can save up the money to do something other than buy shiney toys. I've still got lots of friends and family in SOCAL so we are all plan on meeting in Vegas this year for some debauchery sans the ball and chains. My girlfriend is going to Cuba around the same time. Time apart is awesome.

With regards to the receiver I think I'm the one in the wrong. (you can show this to the sig. other and she'd never believe I'd typed it) The Sony she bought me represented something more than just a new toy. She broke her whole budget for Christmas shopping with just one gift to try and give me something that I wanted. It was utterly selfless. She just had a hard time accepting that I'd be willing to move on to other gear. If I would have manned up right away then this whole problem would have been averted. To me the Sony receiver is worth more than the price tag. I could get $300 for it right now, but I won't sell it, because I appreciate the gesture. Essentially what I'm saying is I was wrong to hide the new receiver purchase.

As for getting a new girlfriend I'm really happy with the one I have now. She's pretty cool for a chick and all, and we seem to have compatible inputs and outputs ;) . I don't plan on getting married anytime soon, but so far this is as close as I've come.

Harken! Harken all ye Audioholics! Harken to my voice and heed the warning in this tale of woe! Takeereasy hast been reduced in Audioholic measure, nay in Manly measure. One of the greatest among us has fallen! Harken, Harken to my voice and heed, yet the same fate befall thee!

Listen now to the events as told in Takeereasy’s posts in Chronological order:

Admission of Act: I have pulled a fast one on the girlfriend…

Plan of Deceptive Action: To pull off this elaborate scam…

Dread of Outcome: Man am I ever gonna get caught…

Explanation of the True Evil of the Act: she bought the 5 yr. extended warranty, I'm only into 6 months of it right now…

Vain Hope that This Might Actually Work: If she asks any direct questions about the receiver I'll tell her the truth…In all reality she doesn't really question me about my electronics.

Justification/Rationalization: Man does she have clothes and shoes. Two closets, two and a half dressers, and threee sets of hanging clothes shelves plus a 6' by 8' bookshelf that she uses as a shoe rack…

Lack of Willpower and Testicular Fortitude: I already told on myself. Can't take guilt for one day…

The Groveling Begins: she is the only girl I've ever dated that doesn't like flowers. Chocolate used to do the trick but now she accuses me of trying to make her fat…

The Weighing of the Proper Amount of Groveling: is absolutely no way she's getting a baby, come on it's only a receiver, not a Porsche…

Trying to Change the Subject to Something that Doesn’t Make You Look so Whipped: I hope you mean a Coors…

Lowing your Audioholic Standards Because You are Whipped: plan on keeping the Sony and buying a cheap, probably used, processor for real this time and seeing what it can do with that…

Hoping We Forgot You Told on Yourself: my girlfriend wouldn't know either if I hadn't talked her into learning the remote…

She Gives You Just Enough Rope to Hang Yourself, and Then You Do: Oh, we have reached an understanding about the man cave and its contents. I'm to buy everything for it myself from now on. I think when she said that she was expecting me to be upset, not breath a sigh of relief….

Trying to Change the Subject to Something that Doesn’t Make You Look so Whipped (part 2): Marantz products have a universal warranty… That said I'm saving about $1000 on the receiver… Right now they have a Denon 2105 refurb on with a 90 day warranty…

Why We Know You are Whipped: only my feelings for her and the desire to keep breathing through my nose stop me from saying things like, "I hate the gift you pulled double shifts to buy me." ...I'm not allowed to buy anything for it until I finish up the main one…

God’s Retribution for Your Evil Act: The receiver still hasn't come yet, and she seems to be getting some pleasure in watching me squirm...it is supposed to clear customs tomorrow, fingers and toes crossed…

Brainwashing by the GF, Complete (or These are the Things She Said I Have to Say or I'm Never Having Sex Again): With regards to the receiver I think I'm the one in the wrong… It was utterly selfless… If I would have manned up right away then this whole problem would have been averted. To me the Sony receiver is worth more than the price tag…

Poor, poor Takeereasy. One more unfortunate victim to the manipulative powers of women. What started off as the virtuous desire to 1) increase both his and her listening pleasure while 2) not hurting her feelings has spiraled into the deep abyss of guilt and self-loathing. Pity him friends. How the mighty have fallen. Steel yourselves against the machinations of “weaker” sex! Truly, the force is strong with them! There, but for the grace of God, go I!

I'm having way to much fun for being at work

Oh, btw, this statement:

I don't plan on getting married anytime soon, but so far this is as close as I've come.
Is a prelude to:

I now introduce to you Mr. and Mrs. Ereasy!

Please, join them on the dance floor as they start their new life together grooving to What the Hell Happened by Blindsided and the Marionettes while enjoying the new Bose system his in-laws just purchased for them!

ouch. I don't think I'll have to worry about the Bose system, I talked her dad out of that disaster and now I'm the chosen one for all things shiney. So at least the gifts are going to be nice, I'll register at a local audio store.

While there may be worse things then marriage (Idon't know what), I'm so far away from that right now that it is inconcievable for me. I'm dating a good girl, yeah it's serious, but I need to be sure she's the one. Only another 20 or 30 years of dating will let me know for sure.

I wish you luck with your girl, but you might want to think about asking a bunch of home theater freaks for relationship advice.

If I had it my way, I would want a universal remote for my wife with a "mute" and "sleep" button.

I could think of another few functions I'd like on that remote. I would need several sheets of Macros in a section titled, "In The Biblical Sense". If ya know what I mean.

I'm stopping here before I offend.

He's right on that one!

The reason why I got in this hobby to spend some time away from the wife ;)

About the remote, mine would include the "Have $ex now!" button :)

Are you Freaking KIDDING ME?! Who better to ask than us? We obviously are more than qualified to dole out advice on a number of important subjects that we know little about (let's be honest, the less we know, the more sure of ourselves we are).
By my count, there was about a 3:1 ratio of Lie to Truth and a 1:1 ratio of Truth to You are SOOOOO dead. So, to sum up, overwhelmingly we think you should lie because if you tell the truth, you are totally toast. Hmmm......and this is bad advice how?

So, let us think of all the other things we can give advice on (God knows our adoring public is itching to find out in what ways those of us that spend more time thinking about HT than SLEEPING can continue to improve their lives):

1) Sock color (Any color as long as it's white)
2) Spousal choices (Any that look like Khellandros66's avatar)
3) Room color (Any dark, flat paint…preferably red)
4) Wire management (No wire in your house should be within 12 inches of any other wire, in wall or out)
5) Workplace ethics (The Audioholics forums take precedence over ANY OTHER deadline you have)
6) Personal Achievement (The measure of a man/woman is directly proportional to the quality of their HT and achieving #4)
7) Professional Achievement (The measure of success at work is how many hours you can spend in the forums and not get fired)
8) Statistical Integrity (The quality of a statistical test is determined by the number of blind people in a room)
9) Hair cuts (Any cut that obstructs in ears in any way could act as a diffuser/absorber, if you absolutely must have long hair, get a mullet)
10) Online Etiquette (One must be courteous and polite to others at all times, unless they can hear the difference between cables, interconnects, or power cords, then they must be taught the error of their ways through verbal flaying and graphs…lots of graphs)
11) Cost Effectiveness (The only way to be absolutely sure you are getting the most for your money is to research it for YEARS…I haven’t bought milk in 2.5 years…looking into getting my own cow)

And lastly,

12) Interpreting Marketing (The quality of a product is inversely proportional to the number of adds you’ve seen about it).
