It was bound to happen, cat knocked over a speaker

Yesterday evening was a hellish 4 hours or so. First, my desktop freaks out and BSOD's and I got disconnected from my work after hours game. It had been working flawlessly for 2 years till last night. So i go finish dinner with the wife and we sit down and eat. Then I look over my shoulder, F'ing cat is sitting on top of my right main, its an EMP E5ti. Well needless to say a second later he decides to jump down, pushing it over and it hits the entertainment center. Awesome, the center is gouged somewhat, and theres an inch chip out of the finish along the top of the speaker. I knew it would happen someday, the speakers just aren't that stable and short enough the stupid cat that likes to jump onto everything can land on it. So after that i spent 3 hours not getting my pc working, a fail all around.

Anyone think the spikes on these are the same size and thread as some common hex bolts or something like that? I'm thinking of building some plinthe's sp? to anchor them to and give them a larger, more stable base.

Man that really stinks. My Wharfedales have a similar shape and if it was not for the plinth they would be very unstable. I'll look in the books that came with it and see if there is a good pic of the base and I will scan it for you. I think with slight modifications it wouldwork well with the EMP's.

Take a spike out and go down to your local hardware store, Ace hardware if you have one near. Look for blindnuts that will fit the spike. Make your plinthe block and drill holes in the bottom of plinthe but not all the way through. Pound the blind nuts in the holes add a litle super glue to hold it in and screw in the spike, done.

My bookshelfs are 38lbs each and the dog knocked one of my surrounds over the other day. It scared her and she ran because it was so loud. Now I have some knicks and scuffs on the back of the speaker (visible) AND on the wood floor... At least the speaker plays fine.

For narrow speakers I used to use outriggers, maybe you can pick up a used pair, that's how I got mine.

See, now that's one good reason to get WmAx approved tower speakers. For a cat to knock them down, it had better be the size of a mountain lion, at least, to counteract the mass.

So go find yourself a used pair of B&W 802N or 802D, or an 801 Series II or II.

Haha yeah i figured there'd be some good chuck the cat suggestions. I told the wife he he knocked over something else or broke something he was done. She wasn't happy but didn't fight it either. Those outrigger feet are expensive new. I know you said buy em used but I think i'd have an easier go building some plinthes for them to increase the base surface area. The biggest issue for these speakers is the distance between the rear spikes is like 4 inches. That isn't much to stand on. I think if i got the plinthe around 8inches across that'd help substantially. And I'd add around an inch or so of height to these shorter than average speakers which is probly a good thing too.

You mentioned "801 Series II" twice. Did you mean to say series II and III? Also, are you referring to the Matrix 801, or Nautilus 801?

Several years ago I used to use Athena F1s as my mains. We got a new "kitty" after the old one (17yo) got ran over (a very sad day). The kitty used the F1s as a climbing post and completely ruined the grills. Now I just stick to bookshelves on sturdy stands.

I would go grilless but the rules of WAF require grills on.

my cat likes to claw things. that is why i don't leave the grills on. and why my chairs don't look new anymore. but i will not resort to animal cruilty. its not her fault. its my fault, i brought her into the house. our 2 cats bring happiness to our home, despite the minor destruction.
