Is upgrading speakers or subwoofer better for noticeable sound improvement?

Hi everyone,

I’m still pretty new to the home theater world and trying to improve my setup little by little. Right now I’m running a basic 5.1 setup with an entry-level AVR and budget speakers. It’s decent, but I feel like something is missing, especially when it comes to bass impact and overall immersion during movies.

I’m trying to figure out what upgrade would actually make a noticeable difference. Would upgrading the subwoofer give me the biggest improvement, or should I focus on better front speakers first?

Also, how much difference does proper speaker placement and room setup really make compared to upgrading hardware? I haven’t done much in that area yet.

Mostly using the system for movies and some occasional music.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated!

Definitely upgrade those speakers first. If you are talking about just mains and since you have a HT, I'd suggest getting new mains where you can eventually add a center that is a direct match. Like for example with my Kef Q11 Meta's, my Q6 Meta center is a direct match.

How much you want to spend on Front L/R, Sub, and center channel? If changing the FL and FR, consider the center channel being the same brand/model. What is in your budget, $$? You might want to look at Crutchfield.com, for speakers.

The front three speakers every time. They are priority 1. Most likely if you have cheap budget speakers they are not very good. What are your speakers and sub?

But before spending, fix placement and do basic room setup; even budget gear can sound much better when positioned correctly. After that, upgrade front speakers if you still want better clarity and dialogue.

That is may be true if your main speakers are no good and woefully deficient.
