Is this TOO much space behind the speakers?

If I place my speakers so that the back of them is facing over my loft balcony, this will create a very large space behind them.

This is kinda hard to explain but the speakers would have a few feet of carpeted loft floor behind them then a railing down to the living room, the living room is all wood (floors, walls, ceiling). Since it is a loft behind this railing the floor drops down about 12-14 feet to the living room. The living room ceiling is vaulted from about 8 feet at the sides to about 25 feet in the middle.

It depends on the speaker design. If they have a port on the back, they're made for placing near some kind of boundary, for reinforcement. The response from any speaker will change when placed in front of a wall or that wall is removed. You'll need to decide if the difference is worth it.

You are going to have to test it basically. As mentioned, it will sort of depend on the speaker itself and the acoustics of the room. It may sound better, or it may be too much for them.
