Just need a somewhat decent blu ray player, 5.1 is all I need. I'm looking at the panny bdp35 right now for $250 on crutchfield, free shipping I believe. I should have snagged the sony s350 on black friday but I missed it. I see some people talk about some sort of better sound on the upper models, can anybody clarify what is so different about the next model up?(the 55 i think?) thanks, also if there is a better deal on this player or any other decent ones let me know

55 decodes the new audio formats, and will output them in several different forms.

If your receiver decodes all the current formats, the 35 is all you need.

Will the Onkyo 8555 receiver decode the newest formats? What do I need to look for to see if they can... I might go big and get something like that Sunfire.

Also will it be a big loss if I get the 35 and my receiver cannot decode the newer formats? Will that mean I get no audio at all?

That is a stereo receiver. It doesn't decode anything.

If you are building an AV system, you need an AV receiver. Not a stereo receiver.

That is an amp. Nothing but an amp. It doesn't decode anything. It doesn't have a volume knob. It is an amp.

YOU NEED TO BE LOOKING AT A/V RECEIVERS, AND NOTHING BUT A/V RECEIVERS.

Nothing "older" will decode something "newer". Get it?

okay okay, I was thinking it was a high grade receiver not an amp. So if I go with the 5 channel amp option, would a preamp be able to do the decoding? Or would I be forced to use a 5.1 receiver as my source unit as opposed to the preamp.

A Pre-Pro processes.

You are talking about some major bucks.

YOU NEED AN A/V RECEIVER.

Any suggestions? I want to give my LSI15's at least 200 wpc (4 ohms) along with whatever center I get, and prob. run my rears at 8 ohms with 100 wpc. I'm having trouble finding some that are a/v receivers and not just amps.

Maybe I should just dump this idea and keep a cheap 5.1 and a strong separate 2.1 w/ sharing the same sub. I can't find a 5.1 rec that can give me the wattage my lsi's want and a 5 chan amp along with a pre pro is getting too expensive.... I don't really see what the pre pro does besides being able to decode the newer audio formats.

What would happen if I tried to play a BD that has newer audio formats but say my HTR does not decode the newest formats and lets say I got the panny bd35 which doesnt either... does this just degrade the SQ? Or does this mean no audio at all, thanks.

Hello, wp, I didn't read all of your 17 posts so far, but just add a 2ch amp??? Seems simple to me?

The receiver's power supply will be less taxed, overall, when powering the other speakers. The front 3 definitely use the most energy, no question, anyhow.

As for dedicated HT pre/pros, they do come with a lot of stuff. I use a receiver as a pre/pro, because I didn't need all that stuff. I think you mentioned Onkyo 855. I use an 805. Some differences that I didn't need:

-balanced XLRs (my amp doesn't have em!)
-Reon HQV (I only watch native hidef!)
-dual HDMI outputs (I only have one display!)

But I do have a grand in the pocket. Cheers.

I see, thanks. I was assuming enough budget for midlevel receiver + 2 ch amp. This can be done for less than $700, easy.
Make sure you use the words A/V receiver, as I am having a hard time getting this to make sense to the OP.

Also make sure when you use the word amp, it is followed by the terms of explanation that an amp is just a box with some speaker connections.
