Is this still a good center channel speaker?

Eosone RSC-300, I have had it for probably 5 years,,and it is a 3-way
speaker:

Overall Frequency Response
90Hz - 22kHz
Recommended
Amplification (8 ohm)
15W min, 125W max
Sensitivity
88dB

Driver Complement
1 x .75" (19mm) shielded tweeter
1 x 5" (12mm) tweeter

2 x 5.25" (133mm) shielded woofers

Enclosure Type
sealed
Crossover Frequency
3.0kHz

Just was curious if some of the newer 2-way speakers would be as good or better,,I push the center channel the most, watching tv and movies,,hardly ever play any music.

I hear good stuff about the infinity BETA C250 that Circuit City has a good deal on.

How would some of the newer speakers out there compare to this older center channel. I may want to upgrade or not???

My fronts are Phase Technology Teatro Tower 10's with powered subs,,also probably easily 6 years old.
thanks much

This is subjective to your ears. If it sounds good then great. There is ALWAYS better. But better to who is the question. So if you are satisfied, try upgrading another piece of equipment.

well the one thing I have noticed (we are a memeber of DVD rental club, so watch serveral DVD's a week), is that the dialogue is sometimes very quiet as compared to the fronts and sub. We will be watching a DVD and we sometimes need to turn the volume up to hear the dialogue well , but then during louder parts (explosions etc.) it is too loud.

I have the Yamaha HTR5960 and have YPAO configured the distance/eq etc.
The center is set to small, fronts to large, LFE set to both (front and sub) surrounds set to small.

I have phase technology teatro tower 10 fronts with a powered sub in each one and Inifnity surrounds.

I have gone into the config and have raised the center channel level to +8.

I guess what I am asking is could it be the speaker or are just some DVDs less dyanmic in the center channel.

The speaker sounds ok when watching normal Direct TV on pro logic, just when a 5.1 or higher source comes in, we sometimes have to strain to hear the dialogue on the center channel.

Any suggestions?

thanks

The reasons for different volumes is that you have mismatched speakers. They have different sensitivities, tonal characters, and the timbre does not match. This will always be tough to match 100% unless you buy 3 matched front speakers from the same brand and line. If you have the money go ahead and find speakers that are a matched set. Ebay and Audiogon are great places to start.

so obviously my best bet is find a Phase Technology center speaker, that would financially be the best way to go instead of spending the big dollars on replacing the fronts.

Does it matter about 2-way versus 3-way center channels??

thanks

Yes IMO I would search ebay and audiogon as well as any others looking for a match.
2vs.3way- Tough question that can be answered again by your own ears.

i have an e-mail into someone at Phase Tech on what current line/center channel would best match my older Teatro Towers from them. We'll see what they come back with.

thanks

Here's a decent option...

Joeunc;
This might be a good option for you. It's on clearance right now from OneCall as well. Specs seem pretty decent for it's size, so you stand to land a pretty decent matching center for $99 (b/f shipping)... -TD

it does look good, and on clearance since they don't make the teatro line anymore,,that one or the V-6 would be good,,but the V-6 is over $200, I do think I should jump on the teatro one,,originally it was over 200 as wel..thanks

NP, glad to help...

For the money and considering your mains, this would be great little upgrade. The low frequency response is much better on this than your current center, is a bit more sensitive so should be more intelligible, much better timbre match w/your mains and like you noted, it's pretty good looking, too... -TD

yep,,and for only $99,,not bad at all,,that way in the next few years when I get new fronts I won't feel like I dropped too much on a center and thus would have to match it. I can do a full change center/fronts/surrounds/sub and only have $99 spent now. And from what I have read in the last 10mins it is almost the same speaker as the their Velocity line V-6 just the earlier version.
