well, thank you for explanation. I guess I might order them and listen for a while see how it is. its just like you said been looking at deftech spec and looked really good.
The specifications could not be more misleading, and it's intentional. It is unfortunate that manufacturers are not required by the FCC to measure under specific guidelines, however if they did there's a good chance it would hurt the smaller internet direct companies because of the cost of having or leasing a facility that meets said requirements would certainly increase their cost, which in turn would increase the cost of their products. Definitive is selling their name, not a high end or high performance product.

how would you compare deftech vs energy speakers? I'm just asking because my friend has energy and he is very happy with them.

I can't speak entirely to that, but Energy had a good track record. The conglomerate AudioVox is now the owner of Klipsch and the API group which subsequently has Energy under their umbrella.

I think that Definitive Tech's speakers are fine, but I wouldn't waste a dime on their subwoofers. I'll make a comparison to Bose. Sure they make expensive speakers and they're a big name, but that does inherently make any or all of their products "good".

They really aren't. They're just a mass market manufacturer by all counts, nothing to get excited about in my opinion. There's much better available. Sky is really the limit on what you can get and I would not limit myself to a mass market brand with a budget of $15,000. That's just lazy.

If you're still going to go with the Definitive Techs then I think this thread has run it's course. I'm sure you'll enjoy what you get. I think it would be hard to find a home theater that cost $15,000 that someone would not enjoy. However I think it ought to be clear by now from the votes, what we've told you, that you would benefit from putting that $15,000 somewhere other than Definitive Technologies.

I am happy with all my energy speakers too but they are the older generations such as Connoisseur reference 22, Veritas 2.3i and RC series. No idea how the new ones are since the Klipsch ownership.

I do like DefTech, and I own a pair of the SM350. Fine speakers, and I have found that these play nice and sound good on a large variety of gear (tubes, SS, chip amps, Lepai, etc).

But, there are some catches with DT!

Don't pay MSRP--there is better out there for the same $, and DT is often found at steep discounts off MSRP.

The specs on the brochures are completely bogus! Marketing at its finest.

I do agree that there is no reason to look at the DT subs though.

I think you will like your DT system. Personally, I would have not gone with the Mythos, those are as much form factor as function.

And, I do agree, at the $15K mark, I would have been looking at Boutique or Internet Direct speakers!

Deftech is indeep household name mostly due to fact they are available in BestBuy/Magnolia
At same time they are one of THE WORST offenders in regards to publishing misleading spec - not incorrect, but misleading. Lets say you have a ford explorer - it has max speed of 125mph. Good luck making a even a slightest turn at that speed. Compare that with Nissan GTR - both running at 125mph - but where you'd feel confident you could survive 125mph change of direction???

Def tech says their sub can play down 12hz - while it's "true", but at level of -50db - it means only dogs could hear that :)

Like I said, you will very likely really enjoy your system! Especially if this is your first step into "real" audio, you are gonna love it!

Just realize that most of us on this site have "been there done that" and are speaking from our experiences.

I just about bought a set of the DT BPs myself several years ago, but I ended up going with the Goldenear T2 instead. Goldenear is another brand that is a cousin to DT and doesn't get a whole lot of love on this particular forum.

Well, you're in a fairly large club. People who come here and say, "Hey. I'm a newbie, don't know anything about audiophile equipment today, but I bought this. What do you think?".

And like most, the answer to you is, "You could have gotten more for your money". The only difference about you is that most people don't drop as much money. But it is what it is. Now, since we're all sooo sweet, we're in the phase of trying to make you feel better.

Lesson? Study before the test.
