Is this a good setup? Advice needed.

Figured I'd break down some pricing for everyone :)

Likely acoustic treatments:

4x Acoustimac 4' x 2' x 4" DMD bass traps = $280
2x Acoustimac 4' x 2' x 2" ArtPanels = $458
4x Acoustimac 4' x 2' x 2" DMD 422 Panels = $200
4x Gik 2' x 2' GridFusor Diffusors = $200
+ shipping

Totals up to about $1300 for a nicely treated room that looks great and sounds better!

I'm going to bet that you watch with lights on and that the Vizio XVT553SV is going to wind up as the better display for you:

Vizio XVT553SV = $1200 refurbished via Walmart or Tigerdirect, $1500 new via Walmart ($1600 new at Amazon)

Call it $2800 for TV + room treatments.

Onkyo TX-NR709 receiver (I'm a fan of having pre-outs so that you can add a separate amplifier in the future if you want to. The 700 series has historically been Onkyo's most reliable model line, other than the 1000, 3000 and 5000 series. Price varies, but expect about $650 (current price on Amazon and 6th Ave Electronics).

Sub-Total = $3450

Auralex GRAMMA isolation riser = $50 (Amazon)
HSU Research VTF-2 MK3 = $570 shipped

Add a 2nd VTF-2 MK3 and Auralex GRAMMA when budget allows ;)

Sub-Total = $4070

1x EMP Tek E5Ci Center speaker = $220
2x EMP Tek E5Bi Bookshelf speakers (for surrounds) = $250
2x EMP Tek E55Ti Large Tower Speakers = $795

Grand Total = $5335

Okay, so my suggested system went a little over budget :p But it includes shipping, which is often overlooked! And there are ways to drop the price a bit:
Drop the $220 for the e5Ci which sounds bad, and check the EMP Clearance section for Scratch and Dents or Open box/B-Stock or what have you. Sometimes these "damages" are not even visible and they have a full overview of them.

An e5Ti might make an interesting center, though. $200 on that scratch and dent section, and there's plenty of e55tis.

Thanks for all the input. I still can't seem to get an answer to one question: are the Def Techs good speakers? I am sure there are better choices, but in itself, are these decent? I have read some glowing reviews, but people on the forums, here and avs, don't mention them much.
I can answer that one for you. I mean my name is AcuDefTechGuy afterall.:D

Everyone will have their own personal opinion. Speakers will also sound differently based on their placements and interactions with room acoustics.

So if I walk into a dealer and think some speakers sound subpar, it may just be that the speaker placement is poor or the room acoustics may be poor or the setup is not great or my personal taste may be different than others.

I've owned the DefTech BP7000SC (flagship), BP7001SC, BP10B, CLR3000, SM450, & Trinity Sub.

I thought the BP7001 & BP7000 sounded better than the $23,000 B&W 800D that I auditioned TWICE at 2 different locations.

Def Tech, and probably Klipsch, usually don't have the best measurements (FR, Polar Response, Resonance, etc.). But they do sound great to a lot of people, including myself.

The one major issue with DefTech that has caused a lot of bashing and disrespect is their marketing - they "lie" about their frequency responses on their website and listed specs.

Some people can't stand that. And not everyone will like the sound of every speaker out there.

Ask yourself these questions:

1) How important are others' (audiophile) perceptions of your speakers (peer pressure)? This may also affect resale value, which no one thinks about when they buy speakers. :)

2) How important is brand name recognition and prestige?

3) How important is actual speaker measurements to you? Do you just care about how the speakers sound to you? Or are things like better accuracy and better polar response matter just as much?

To a lot of us, if the speakers don't measure very well on the on-axis frequency reponse and off-axis frequency reponse (polar response), they get no respect from us regardless of price.:D

For example, the new $24,000 B&W 800 Diamond measures superbly in terms of cabinet resonance (lack of resonance), but it measures POORLY in terms of both on-axis FR & polar response. As a result, B&W gets absolutely no respect from people like me, GranteedEV, AJinFL, and many others who care about the basic fundamentals of great speakers.:D

You could say the same about Wilson Audio and a lot of other ultra-expensive esoteric speakers out there.

At the same time, I've also auditioned speakers that measure pretty solidly, but ended up sounding very mediocre at best to me.

So you have to look at both measurements and actual audition.

In conclusion, I find that Def Tech speakers sound very, very good to my ears, as they do to your ears. They won't win any awards for speaker measurements, but their on-axis and polar response (off-axis) measurements aren't as bad as some other speakers either - even ones that cost 5 times more.

Room treatments

I have 4 large acoustic panels/bass traps.

I don't think they did anything for me with any speakers I've ever owned, including DefTech BP7000 & BP7001, Linkwitz Orion, Revel Salon2, & KEF 201/2.

So if my budget were $5K, I wouldn't waste a dime on acoustic panels. But that's just me.

I have listened to B&W 683 and they were no competition for the Def Tech's. I have to admit that I love the sound of the 8060s.
I've listened to the B&W 803D, 802D, and 800D. I know what you mean.

You and I might have the same tastes in speakers.

Have you auditioned Paradigm speakers? I'm just curious to see what you think of them.

I thought the RBH Sound T2P/T3P sounded great. I can see why Gene & Audioholics staff love those speakers!

DenPureSound thinks his Klipsch RF82s sound a lot better than the Infinity Classia C336 for stereo music listening, but PENG and I probably have a little bit of a hard time agreeing. It's just a matter of tastes difference. Of course, PENG also loves his B&W 802D speakers.:D

Thanks everybody for the detailed responses. This is much better than anything I heard over on AVS (no offense to anyone). I think I am going to talk to the retailer and see if he'll let me audition the system in house. I may even offer to pay for the system with the caveat that I can return it if I am unhappy.

You said they had too much bass boom to be 10/10, right? - I wonder if the reason it sounded that way was because the dealers set them up with unbalanced subwoofer sections - Because my EMP speakers definitely don't have too much bass.

And did you listen to the T2 or the T2/R? My understanding is that the T2/R uses more high end drivers.

I think the dealer definitely tried to impress me with the bass, so he probably jacked up the bass too much. The bass sounded so awesome, though.:D

The treble sounded awesome too.

But I think the boost in the bass probably hurt the midrange detail. Perhaps if the bass were more balanced/flat, the midrange detail might have been awesome as well.

I think it might have been the regular T2/P, not the upgraded Reference T2/P.

The only problem with RBH is the aesthetics.

They have slightly improved on the aesthetics with the SX-Reference series, but still not as sexy as hat or my cat.:)

And I'm not naming any names or anything, but some people around here are kind of shallow and they do care a great deal about aesthetics and all.:D

Maybe those lazy RBH people might care to post some better looking wood veneer pictures of their SX-Ref flagship speakers.:D
