Thank you all for your comments and help.

I have the picture now... buy a converter. It won't look pretty, but maybe I can build it into a wall.

Electricdick.... I may look at those OM-7's, I'm using the sats and I get great mid to top end, super "thump the chest" lower end, but dismal upper/mid bass (if you know what I mean!)
I'm glad I caught this thread. I would not use a converter. Every North American home has 240 volts coming into the house, in two phases. Dryers, cookers, base board heaters etc, use 240 volts. The 120 volt wall sockets are just connected to one phase.

Have an electrician wire you a 240 volt outlet. The socket will be different, the spades are at right angles to the 120 volt outlets, so a 120 volt device can not be plugged into it.

The other issue is that some gear has internal transformer taps, that can be rewired to 120 volts. I own some gear with mains transformers like that. This is much more common on older gear. These days to save money, more often than not the power transformer installed is just for the market intended.

The other thing is do you know the time constant of the FM de emphasis where you are? For instance Europe is 50 msec and North America it is 75 msec. So for FM to sound right, that might need changing also.

You're right! The room above our garage has 4 x 220v outlets..... which allows me to use my printer and scanner! Our oven is into a 220v outlet.... and I bet you're right about the dryer, but I didn't see it plugged in!

We did get an electrician to look, but he made it sound like such a work-up to convert a couple of sockets, we didn't bother (I'm sure he wanted to run new wires to the panel). Onkyo told me that the 989 was region specific, so I had to use a converter.

Time constant... you've lost me. How can I change my FM (I presume you're talking about radio???)

I am surprised by the converter.... no noticeable difference to the amp or sub. Not a whisper of hum! But it is the ugliest thing, and I can't really park it out of sight. Sort of ruins the looks of the set up!

Thanks for your advice.

The FM has an HF pre emphasis at the transmitter, that has to be run through de emphasis in the FM tuner. Where did you come from? I will see if I can find what the required time constant was where you came from. A skilled service tech can change this by changing a couple of components, if it needs changing.
