Is there a way to change the 5.1 outs into digital?

I've just realized that with a regular 2ch CD playing and switching between the "multi channel" input and the coax input, the coax sounds much better, even when the multi channels lack of bass is approximated in the 2ch coax playback. Now this seems to be no big deal, just don't use the multi 5.1 input you say, but when playing SACD I have no choice. It would seem that I'm losing some sound quality by using the mandatory 5.1. Now is it the 5.1 out that's causing the problem, is it the 5.1 IN of the receiver, or what? And is there any way around this problem?

The player is doing the decoding and sending each individual channel (now analog) to the receiver over the 5.1 outputs. If you don't care for the sound it is because of the player - the receiver does nothing but amplify the signal.
