Is there a difference in decoding formats with age?

I haven't asked a stupid question in a while so....

I am wondering how well recievers stack up to each other when it comes to decoding different formats like DTS or Dolby digital, or any of the ES or EX offshoots. Do these companies use propritary software in order to decode these formats, or do they get to write their own? Or am I missing something all together? Is there a difference with regards to age of the receiver and the quality of its decoding? In other words does a Denon 3805 have improved decoding capability over a 3803? (Not including new formats like PLIIx.)

Does a 2001 receiver decode dolby digital or DTS any differently than a 2005 receiver if all of the inputs are the same?

I'm aware that many receiver manufacturers offer their own form of multi-channel audio, thats not what I'm talking about.
