Is the Denon DVD2930 too good?

I am a newbie so apologies if a similar post has appeared elsewhere.

A friend of mine bought me a Hitachi PJTX200 some time ago and I hooked it up to my existing DVD player, a Denon 1906 amp and the Kef KHT1005 speaker set.

My DVD player is dying.

So I want to buy a new DVD player with upscale capability to maximise my viewing of DVDs on the projector.

My original choices were the:

- Denon DVD1930; or the
- Marantz DV6001.

However, having searched various forums/reviews, I can see that the Denon DVD1930 may have lip sync issues due to the Faroujda upscale system. I have also read a forum post that said that the Denon 1920 when connected to my projector suffered from the same lip sync problem (so I assumed the 1930 may have the same issue).

I know the Marantz DV6001 uses the same Faroujda system so I am at a bit of a loss.

A friend of mine also pointed out that maybe I should go for a better DVD player (Denon DVD2930) as:

(i) I will get a better picture; and
(ii) DVD2930 doesn't use Faroujda so won't get lip sync problems

My only concern with this DVD player is whether my system will cope with such a good DVD player? I think the DVD2930 will produce a better picture as it will be directly connected to the projector but will I be wasting money as my amp and speaker system are on the cheap(er) side?

Any thoughts?

My suggestion to you would be pick up an Oppo upconverting dvd players. They are far cheaper and do a great job plus with the money left over you can start upgrading your speakers.

Thanks for the quick reply but doesn't the Oppo use the Faroujda upscaling effect too?

Also, how good is the Faroujda at playing CDs?

The oppo does have Faroujda processing but I haven't heard of or personally experienced any problems with it. The oppo plays everything I have put in it very well (CDs, DVDs, SACDs and Data discs with various forms of music) and I only purchased it after many great recommendations from members of this forum.

The Oppo 971 and 981 do use the Faroudja processor. The Oppo 970 does not. At $150, the 970 is the cheapest Oppo DVD player and should work great in your system.

You're running from a phantom problem. If there was a "Faroujda upscaling effect" issue do you think that 90% of the equipment would still be using it?

Okay - understand the phantom issue.

But this still puts me in a quandary.

Trying to summarise all of the above, the "problem" probably isn't a problem (and more importantly I could always test it out by connecting Denon 1930 to my projector before purchase and see if there is actually a problem).

Let me rephrase the question.

In terms of outputting DVD video quality, would I be correct in assuming that the following players are in the correct decreasing order of quality?

Denon 2930
Oppo 981HD
Denon 1930
Marantz 6001
Oppo 970HD

In terms of audio quality when listening to CDs, would the ordering of the above be the same? Has anyone compared the audio quality of the Denon 2930 to Denon 1930 to Oppo players?
