Is Oppo the way to go?

Get the SE :D Even though you don't need it because you are going HDMI...
I looked at the upgraded unit, but just couldn't justify the extra couple hundred for what I need. Thanks anyway.

DVD is not Blueray

Can't turn a dvd into more but if any player can improve a dvd short of one of the old school denon or Yamaha $1000 plus units the Oppo is definitely the choice

I would own an Oppo if I was not so brand loyal, but then the bedroom could use a blu ray player.

Going brand loyal for all your gear isn't always the best thing.

I have to agree, but with what equipment I have I can do anything the the Oppo can do and then some.:D
I mainly got the Oppo because of the SACD/DVD-A capabilities and have it in one box, because I already know I can get similar BD performance from much less expensive players :)

How long would that cheaper stuff last though?
Certainly a valid point and I agree, but I have owned inexpensive Sony CD players that lasted 15+ years.

For a ~$100 player, if the Pannys last me 3 years then they are more than justified. Early on, BD players were adding a lot of new features and the new profiles, so the first players were almost obsolete to some extent within a year. I don't think we will see any big new features aside from 3D in the next few years, so the chances of needing to upgrade a current player are much lower, but I will probably have upgraded the BD-65 by then anyway. I most likely will keep the Oppo for quite a while comparatively though.

My Panny BD35 lasted me six months before it died.

There are always lemons, and they are more likely when the unit cost is lower. I've gotten a few in my time as well, but I've been happy with Panny over the past 10 years.

I love Panny as my camera and camcorder are Panny, I would own a Panny TV if I could find one here in South Korea.

Looking over these Quotes, I see some believe other DVD players rival the OPPO. Especially the Panasonics. Is it so in the Video and Audio areas? That's mainly what I wanted to know. I'm not worried about other aspects, just DVDs.

In terms of blu-ray, PQ will pretty much be the same. Audio is a different story, at least when it comes to analog. For sound via digital, it won't matter.

Based on testing, the Oppo (or rather the ABT chipset) is definitely one of the two at the top of the food chain as far as upscaling SD DVD goes, but it is still dependent on the disc as well. Good discs look good, bad discs still look bad. My Panny upscales pretty well too, as does my PS3. Can I tell the difference? Yes, but it isn't such a big difference that I would be thinking "I can't watch this" compared to the Oppo. With the Oppo, I am often surprised at how good the upscaling is when watching certain movies, Kill Bill for example, looks almost as good as the Blu-ray. So it kind of depends on just *how* good you are looking for. I am going to hook up the BD-65 this weekend and compare it to the BD-60.

I think we discussed this in a previous thread. The benefits of the Oppo over other players would be the good analog audio section and the top notch upscaling, but upscaling isn't going to be perfect no matter what device you are using.

I can't tell the difference in DVD PQ between the Oppo BD 83 and my older Marantz Universal player purchased in 2006. PQ for DVD seems identical.

BD is better, however I have to say SQ improvement of BD over DVD is impressive.

We have had a lot of visitors lately and they have noted what I have, a great improvement in the naturalness of speech on loss less BD.

That is interesting as when NPR labs where doing listening research for iBiquity, they found that listeners could tell digital compression on speech more easily than music. I have been puzzled by their date for some time, but now I'm convinced it is valid.

I have really concentrated on getting highly natural conversational speech. On DVD it comes up slightly short, but not on BD. Practically all family members have commented on that without prompting, which is interesting.

I've for a long time maintained that we can generally tell differences in SQ most easily with speech. Not everyone has heard a violin, piano, orchestral, banjo, jawharp concert, but just about everyone hears naturally produced human voices on a daily basis. The familiarity with voices is overwhelmingly more than with acoustic instruments.

Are you comparing the two via component or via HDMI? If it's component (as may have been the primary video output from the Marantz), you aren't using the BDP-83's ABT processor and it's not a particularly good comparison.

Everything is via HDMI and the processing is done by the Marantz AV 8003 pre/pro.

I think that is the most likely explanation.

no way to oppo

My Oppo 980 bit it after 14 months of light duty use, first the picture went, then the audio, got it on the cheap and I can see why...
