Is Naming Something "Reference" Slick Marketing Ploy?

I sometimes see ads with a product being called 'our reference speaker, receiver, etc. ' Are they trying to say it's the best of the best of the best?

I dunno.... there are some brands that actually have a “Reference” line and an “Ultra Reference” line. Make of that what you will.
