Is My Receiver Trash or Fixable?

Can't get the specifics now but I need to know if my receiver is trashed. So I had a party (idiot) and am was two HK bookshelf speakers from my HK receiver w/ some good gauge wire, might have blown it. Sorry I don't have the specifics but I was running it full strength for about an hour (idiot), I turned it down, then back up and something happened.

- Sounds very tinty and the volume depends on what is being ran. Ipod dock is quiet but the tv can get pretty loud, still w/ no depth.

- Tried resetting the receiver, no luck. No noticeable difference between channels.

- Imagine listening to loud music through headphones not in your ears.

I can get any details needed tomorrow. Just wondering if I should send it in, check it myself, or buy a new one. If so, what is the best bottom of the bucket choice, not looking for anything amazing. Thanks.

Are you sure you didn't blow the speakers?
If you have access to another pair, try hooking them up to see if the problem persists.

I would just check the speakers like mentioned and if they are fine check to see if there is a reset on the reciever or in the manual if not then I would probably use the opotunity to upgrade to a better reciever.

Exactly what I was thinking.

I'm going to agree with the rest of the bunch, sounds like you blew out the woofers in the speakers. You said you're using two HK bookselfs, what model are they? Are from a HTIB style system? From what I can see on the site all their speakers have a 3" woofer and don't reach below 100Hz, if you were trying to drive them at "party" volumes you more than likely blew them up and not the receiver. By the way what model is your receiver?

Alright so thanks first of all.

-The receiver is an HK3770, the cd channel might be out, had to switch my ipod dock into aux to get sound this time.

-The speakers aren't HK, they are actually Polk Audio R20's with a 6.5" woofer, tweeter, and port.

-The woofers on my speakers aren't working, just the tweeters. I tried hooking up a old Pioneer stack and the woofer wasn't working but the little 3 inch was, could just be blown too.

-These are all about 4 years old, bought new.

Have you tried the speakers with a different receiver? Sounds like it's them but since you said you tried some different speakers and the woofers on them didn't work either I'm curious if it's part of the receiver. Though if it was the receiver I would expect no audio output.

If you blew the cd input you might have blown more of the internals. Try the speakers with something else and see if they work.

I'm living in a house with some other people so I don't have the best resources. There are some small speakers lying around with fixed wires attached. Would those prove anything?

So I ended up figuring out that I had blown both of my speakers at the same time. So my receiver is fine, now im just in the market for new speakers. thanks everyone.

You might be able to fix them or get them repaired.

If that's a no go then look at a pair of Behringer 2030p's or Infinity Beta 20s.
