Is my receiver sufficient?

I'm considering upgrading my speakers to a set of either B&W 683's or Focal Chorus 726's and I was told that my Oknyo tx-sr602 would not do well with these speakers. I know that it's not the best, but will it work? The only reason I ask, besides their recommendation, is because looking at their specs they both can dip down to near 4 ohms even though they are 8 ohm compatible. Also they recommended that I get an amp to run out of my receivers pre out. Would this be worthwhile or is there something better I can do if my receiver is not up to par? Thanks for any info.

You should be fine as long as you aren't trying to blast them or anything. I'm not sure if that specific receiver has pre-outs but if it does, you can always add an external amp later if you feel the Onkyo isn't sufficient. The speakers would really benefit from having around 150-200w of clean power from an external amp. The Rotel RB1070 and Rotel RB1080 would be great amps to match the 683s, but their prices can be a little steep. So I would just try it with your receiver and then see if your dealer will let you bring an amp home to demo. Then see if the amp's cost is justifiable or not.

Thanks for the the help. I have the Onkyo 602 though. It should be similar in features just a few years older. I will have to check to see if it has pre outs or not. I will be using them mostly for home theater/television so would that mean I need a 5-7 channel amp?

Onkyo doesn't offer pre-outs (other than for the sub) until the 7xx series.

Even with the current receiver, the new speakers should be a good upgrade. If you decide in the future that you need Bluray and HDMI audio processing, then that might be justification for to upgrade the receiver or upgrade to seperates.
