Is It Worth Upgrading

Right now I am a college student and am currently running a 5.1 theatre system off a 5 channel sony reciever with energy speakers. I have two extra energy satelites since I added towers and have been looking at picking up a Yamaha rxv 750 or 1500 reciever. My question is, is it really going to make that much difference in terms of sound? I have numerous other things I can buy with this cash but since there are no dvds currently formated for 7.1 I was wondering if its a bit premature to go out and blow 7 or 800 bux on a reciever thats only going to make a little bit of difference. I am new to this home audio stuff so I dont want to rush into things. Would I be better off just buying a better 5.1 reciever for around 400 bux? or upgrading my speakers since they are lower end energy speakers. For that price I could even throw a small system in my bedroom so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

Well,... I think it will boil down to how well you like the sound of your current receiver. Personally I don't like the sound of most Sony receivers, especially the DE line, I feel they are way underpowered, and do not drive the majority of speakers very well. I think just about any receiver from Marantz, Yamaha, Denon, Pioneer, NAD, Onkyo etc. etc. that is in your price range would sound better than Sony. Just "My" opinion.
Is the 7.1 upgrade worth it,... ????? I think that would be up to you.
