Is it possible to modify a bose system?

Hear me out. As some of you may have read in other posts, Im presntly trying to build a main home theater set up. Currently i have a old as crap bose acoustimass system that i got for free. Since i hate the little speakers, would it be possible to switch them out for a set of small booksheld speakers to use for the bedroom?

I was thinking a set of audioengine speakers or something of the like. Is this even possible? Bose isnt forthcoming with any of their stats, but i thought i heard the small cubes were 6 ohm somewhere.

Why don't you just sell it on craigslist. I'm sure someone would buy it for 500 bucks. With that cash you could piece together a great setup.

The way Bose tricks their speakers into sounding the way they want is through equalization. Drastic equalization. The 901 equalizer, as an example, essentially buried the 1KHz on a standard 12 band graphic equalizer, raised the low and highest bands and connected the dots in a straight line. We tried to make them sound the same with their equalizer and ours, when I worked at a stereo store and it was very close. The difference with the small cubes is that they couldn't push any bass through the little speakers, so they cut it off a lot higher than anyone would normally recommend and if you listen closely when musical notes go from low to high (or vise-versa), you'll hear that the direction of the sound at or near the crossover point seems to move and that's why subwoofer crossover frequency is supposed to be much lower.

To be honest, you won't get good sound unless you can find some speakers that sound like the original ones because Bose doesn't allow equalization or changes in relative level. They don't even allow that in their car systems.

That was what i was probably going to do. I have a couple of old car amps and a 15" JL sub that i was going to unload too.

Has anyone done it though? i dont see any reason why you couldnt, other than the waste of funds.

The Audioengines are great little powered speakers as they are. Trying to mate them with that useless Bose "bass toaster", which intentionally sucks out the lows from the signal to the satellites, would be an effort in futility and besides, I think there are laws against miscegenation in many sates.
