Is Elvis Costello Deaf?

...Or does he just not care? Or perhaps he doesn't know any better. You see, I just received "The Boy Named If" on CD from Amazon. This is one of the worst sounding music recordings I have ever bought...and I've bought a few. Thank goodness for Amazon's reasonable return policy or I'd be out the $12.50. Elvis is listed as the co-producer, so I'll just lay the blame on him and Universal Music. If they are trying to kill the CD, albums that sound like this are a good way to do it. Practically no dynamic range, no presence and no separation. Nearly monophonic. Drums that sound like toys. Disastrous, disgusting and disappointing. I seriously didn't know it was possible to make a recording that sounds this bad. Unless it really was intentional. Surely not!

On the other hand, from the same Amazon order, I received "Talking Heads '77" and "The B-52's" on CD also. Both sounded very, very good. The Costello CD is a 2022 release. So much for progress!
