If you are running full range front and center speakers and satellite rears in a small room?

Only you can decide that. Do you feel like you are missing out on bass? When you watch movies do you want more of a visceral feel when something explodes, bangs, or stomps? If you're happy with how things sound, then no. If you think you want more, BOOM, then yea you could need a sub.

"Full range" would mean capable of adequate performance at 20Hz.

You don't NEED a sub, but it definitely helps. As fuzz said, if you don't mind the way it sounds without one, there's no reason you can't run it that way.

Details please. What speakers, amps, room size, etc....

I run full range speakers, each with powered subs built in. I also have a sub with an 18" driver and a 4000 watt amp. I still wish I had more bass. Your call though.
