So, as detailed in this thread…

http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/loudspeakers/87216-looking-new-review-baseline-speaker-system-something-rock-house.html

I’m in the market for new speakers. Ideally, these will be 3 identical bookshelf style speakers at about $500-700 each. As I started out, the only model from my list that I had listened to were the SVS Ultras. They were the speaker that, when compared side by side with my JBL Studio II in a recent review, bumped an upgrade up the priority list. This made them the benchmark as I began.

As I’ve been visiting multiple storefronts in Oregon to do some listening, I thought, “I should share my experiences, not only of the speakers, but the stores themselves”. So, that’s what I’m going to do.

Basic format is 250 words on the store and 250 words on the speakers. I tend to be a little verbose, so we’ll see if I can keep to these constraints.

This is an entirely non-scientific experiment as detailed in the disclaimer in the next post. If you have suggestions as I go, please offer them by replying in the thread. I’m looking for as many perspectives as I can get as I work through my purchasing process.

Whenever possible, I used my test CD with 3 tracks consistently, and 3-4 more as permitted/needed. This wasn’t always possible, as you’ll find.

I tried to approach each dealer identically: “Hi, my name is Marshall and I’d like to listen to (insert name of speaker)”, offer that I brought my own CD, and let them guide the process as much as possible from there.

I’ll post links to new entries in this thread, so if you subscribe, you can keep track of what’s new.

Disclaimer: When conducting a scientific experiment, you should only change one variable at a time. My process is decidedly non-scientific. With different speakers, rooms, equipment, and long periods of time in between listening, you should understand that the obscene number of changing variables, coupled with the fallibility of acoustic memory, make direct comparison impossible. Please see these posts, not as a speaker review, but a review of the buying process. In other words, try to have fun. I am.
