Seriously, I have no life.
I really thought I had no more to say on this subject until you mentioned the FTC (Federal Trade Commission).

I have a friend who works for the FTC, and among his many responsibilities there, he enforces the rules on amplifier power ratings and other audio related stuff. Generally this is very low priority stuff for the FTC, as there is plenty of competition, with a wide variety of products for sale, no monopolies, and no serious cases of consumer fraud. They are much more concerned with identity theft and internet fraud.

I asked him why the FTC ignores the audio cable industry and he smiled, winked ;) and said, "We don't go there, and you shouldn't either."
I really meant that if someone sells by deceptive means, it should be fraud. In all other cases, if someone is cowed by the pretty packaging the shiny plugs but don't bother to do some research or try the product, it's "Caveat Emptor", as usual.

As far as I'm concerned, if someone makes a false claim, it's game on for fraud. Ignorance is one thing but lying just to make a sale is too much like a used car salesman. Re: internet fraud- what category does buying over the 'Net, based on false claims, fall in?

Whatever do you mean? I can't think of a single example where I have heard someone tell us what we need, how things are and how they'll take care of everything.

I think that we live in a world that is very disfunctional, and where false claims are normal practices, and part of our daily lifes.
It has been like that forever, and it will remain like that forever.
The world we live in is incurable, and there is no antidote for it.
That virus, that disease keep spreading more an more.
At the end it will kill us all.
