Local dealer said he will sell me the 40.7 AV receiver for $1000.00 to start off my project with , he recommended para sound A21 Amp ,
He also claimed i want the dolby Atmos feature as it will upscale and make even a 2 channel system sound way better ,
Is this true an is there a better option for that price range and the needs for a 5.1 o 2 ht system and be able to buy pass for nice audio ??

Seems like when you get away from the big box guys around here , The installers push Integera , or audio-source, you might here Marantz once in a blue moon, Im thinking they dont have to compete with online and get a better margin that will sustain their business ,i get that but Makes it hard to get straight answers about the other choices or good stuff available as they all claim theirs blow the others away

Integra @ Onkyo are the same company. Integra is used by a lot of installers, it's not that it's bad, and $1000.00 is a decent price for the 40.7 series.

  • I think there are a lot of other options at that price point. For $799.99 you could get a Denon 4200 which would have better room correction (IMO Audyssey 32 Pro)
  • As for Atmos making 2 channel Sound better, that is very dependent.
  • for 2 Channel Music, not so much, in fact it may come across much worse
  • For Movies that support Atmos, you will get different opinions, but as an actual person who runs it, I wouldn't listen to movies any other way.
  • For Movies that do not support it, I am not a big fan of simulated Atmos

As for the Parasound A21, it's a great amp, but I see no reason to just use the amps already in the receiver. It will also depend on the speakers you are driving.

No.

Dolby ATMOS won't improve 2CH sound or anything else. The only thing it does is add more surround speakers.

ATMOS won't improve the clarity of the dialogues or improve your bass quality or improve the sound of your main 3 speakers and subwoofers.

I would try to find the Denon X4200 for $799 or X3200 for $599. Both have pre-outs so you can add external amps if you want later. But if you are like most people with room size like most people, then you most likely won't even need external amps.

I need to correct myself on this, when I was referring to ATMOS, I was referring to a multi channel HT setup, not 2 channel. Thank you for that.

FWIW rather than Atmos providing upscaling/matrix duties, I think it's more accurate to call it the Dolby Surround mode that would do that; Atmos is a specific encoding in a soundtrack recording. Whether one likes it or not, I've read both good and bad comments on its use, even in matrixing 2ch sources.

Do Integra AVR's and Pre-Pro's heat up significantly like Onkyo?

A friend of mine at work says his Integra pre-pro heats up so much that he won't use it in the Summer. He only uses the Integra in the Winter. :)

I think previous AH regulars already answered you direct questions, but let me give you a bit of guidance.
Speakers (including) sub make about 95% of total sound quality. You should consider your budget and allocate about 80% to speakers
